What Education Do U.S. Jobs Actually Need?

By Chris Gaglardi
| Published September 23, 2026

Most U.S. jobs are not in occupations that BLS classifies as requiring a four-year degree for entry. In the 2025–35 Employment Projections, occupations typically requiring a high school diploma or no formal educational credential account for 59.0% of 2025 employment. Our aggregation of BLS line-item occupations shows those same two education categories account for 68.6% of projected annual occupational openings.

59.0%of 2025 employment is in occupations typically entered with high school or no formal credential.
68.6%of projected annual openings are in those high-school-or-less entry categories.
96.6%of projected annual openings at the all-occupations level come from occupational separations rather than net growth.
What those numbers do not mean: BLS is not saying that 59% of employers will hire anyone with only a high school diploma. It assigns each occupation one typical education needed for entry category. Employer preferences, licensing rules, alternate entry routes, work experience, and on-the-job training can all differ. BLS tracks several of those factors separately.

This distinction matters because career advice often mashes together three different questions: What education is typically needed to enter an occupation? What education do current workers actually have? and What will a particular employer require from you? They overlap, but they are not interchangeable.

U.S. jobs and openings by typical entry education

BLS uses eight education categories. The employment and wage figures below come from the published 2025 education summary. Annual openings are TSNET sums of current BLS line-item occupations grouped by their entry-education assignment.

So what percentage of jobs require a college degree?

If we use the BLS classification literally, occupations assigned an associate degree or higher account for about 32.3% of 2025 employment. Bachelor's-degree occupations alone account for 25.2%.

But “require” is a dangerous word here. BLS calls the field typical education needed for entry, and it explicitly notes that multiple paths may exist. Its categories are national occupation-level assignments, not a census of every employer's screening rules.

That is why this page should not be read as “college doesn't matter.” BLS's separate worker-level data still show higher earnings and lower unemployment at higher levels of educational attainment. The useful conclusion is narrower: the labor market contains a lot of viable work across multiple education and training pathways.

Why job openings are not the same thing as job growth

The 2025–35 projections show about 17.46 million occupational openings per year at the all-occupations level. Only a small fraction comes from net expansion of the total number of jobs.

BLS projects about 9.51 million annual occupational transfers and 7.36 million labor-force exits. Together, those separations equal 96.6% of projected annual openings. Net employment growth is the remaining 3.4% at the economy-wide summary level.

This is why a giant occupation with modest growth can create far more entry opportunities than a tiny occupation growing at 30%. Growth rate tells you how quickly an occupation is changing. Openings tell you more about the scale of opportunities for people entering it. Neither tells you whether there will be a labor shortage, because BLS does not project the supply of workers.

Career-research rule: compare growth rate, numeric growth, and annual openings separately. One number cannot do all three jobs without lying to you a little.

The middle of the market is bigger than “college or no college”

About 18.4 million jobs fall into the three BLS categories between high school and a bachelor's degree: associate degrees, postsecondary nondegree awards, and some college with no degree. Together they represent about 10.8% of employment.

The categories are very different. Associate-degree occupations have a published 2025 median annual wage of $64,990. Postsecondary nondegree-award occupations have a median of $49,910 and include careers as different as practical nursing, medical assisting, HVAC, automotive service, and truck driving. “Some college, no degree” is a separate BLS category whose employment is projected to shrink 3.2% overall through 2035.

If you are comparing shorter training routes, see our guides to certifications that pay well, trade-school training timelines, and higher-paying careers without a bachelor's degree.

A “high school” occupation can still require years of training

BLS separates education from related work experience and from on-the-job training. That prevents one of the dumbest shortcuts in career content: treating a high-school entry classification as if the job were unskilled.

Electricians, plumbers, and elevator installers are all classified as typically requiring a high school diploma for entry, but BLS assigns apprenticeship as their typical post-hire training. Industrial machinery mechanics and electrical power-line installers are high-school-entry occupations assigned to long-term on-the-job training. HVAC technicians are typically assigned a postsecondary nondegree award plus long-term OJT.

For actual program and licensing decisions, the national BLS category is only a starting point. State requirements can matter. Our electrician training and HVAC training guides cover those pathways in more detail.

Entry education and worker education are different datasets

BLS also publishes the educational attainment of workers age 25 and older using pooled 2023–24 American Community Survey data. That table describes the highest education current workers have completed. It does not tell you what was required when they were hired.

General and operations managers

BLS entry assignment: bachelor's degree.

Current worker attainment: 3.3% less than high school, 17.0% high school, 23.2% some college, 9.6% associate, 33.6% bachelor's, 11.4% master's, and 2.0% doctoral/professional.

Software developers

BLS entry assignment: bachelor's degree.

Current worker attainment: 14.0% have less than a bachelor's degree, while 85.9% have a bachelor's or graduate degree (rounding prevents a perfect 100%).

Registered nurses

BLS entry assignment: bachelor's degree, but BLS explicitly documents associate-degree and diploma routes as alternatives.

Among current RNs age 25+, 24.9% report an associate degree as their highest credential and 54.7% report a bachelor's degree.

Electricians

BLS entry assignment: high school diploma plus apprenticeship.

Among current electricians age 25+, 53.7% report education beyond high school, including some college, associate degrees, and bachelor's-or-higher credentials.

Source: BLS Table 5.3. These are incumbent-worker attainment distributions, not entry requirements. BLS cautions that current workers may have entered under different requirements and that attainment can differ for many reasons.

This explorer uses the complete current set of BLS line-item occupations in the 2025–35 National Employment Matrix. Search by occupation, SOC code, education, or training type. It is deliberately not a “career score.” Sort-of-magical scores are great at hiding assumptions and terrible at helping people make expensive decisions.

Source: BLS Employment Projections Table 1.2, released August 27, 2026; wage reference period May 2025. Openings are annual averages over 2025–35, not predictions for a specific year. Rows are initially ordered by projected annual openings.

How to use this data without fooling yourself

  1. Start with the entry path, not the wage. A $90,000 median does not mean a new graduate starts at $90,000.
  2. Check the training column. Formal schooling may be short while paid skill development takes years.
  3. Use openings for scale and growth for direction. Big openings can come from churn; fast growth can happen in a tiny occupation.
  4. Verify licensing where you live. National education assignments cannot encode every state or local requirement.
  5. Treat worker attainment as context, not permission. Seeing current workers with less education than the typical entry assignment does not prove that a new entrant can follow the same path today.

Methodology and limitations

Employment, education assignments, openings, and training: BLS Employment Projections, 2025–35. Published August 27, 2026.

Wages: May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics as carried in the current Employment Projections tables.

Worker educational attainment: BLS Table 5.3, based on pooled 2023–24 ACS microdata for employed workers age 25 and older.

TSNET rollups: “High school or less,” “sub-baccalaureate postsecondary,” and “bachelor's or higher” are editorial groupings of official BLS categories. They are not BLS categories.

Rounding: BLS publishes employment and openings in thousands. Category sums may differ slightly from published all-occupations totals because of rounding.

What this cannot tell you: whether a particular employer will hire you, whether your state requires a license, whether enough qualified workers will be available, or whether a given credential will pay off for you personally.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage of U.S. jobs typically require a college degree for entry?

Using BLS's 2025 entry-education assignments, occupations typically requiring an associate degree or higher account for about 32.3% of employment. That is an occupation-level classification, not a count of individual employers' degree requirements.

Do most projected job openings require a bachelor's degree?

No. Our aggregation of current BLS line-item occupations shows that high-school-or-less entry categories account for about 68.6% of annual openings. Bachelor's-or-higher occupations account for about 20.9%.

Why are projected openings much larger than net job growth?

Because openings include opportunities created when workers permanently transfer to other occupations or exit the labor force, in addition to employment growth. BLS projects separations to account for about 96.6% of economy-wide annual openings.

Can I enter a career with a different education level than BLS lists?

Sometimes. BLS says its classification captures the typical path and does not capture every alternate path. The Occupational Outlook Handbook and state licensing sources are better for occupation-specific route details.

Does “high school diploma” mean little training is required?

No. BLS tracks education and OJT separately. Several skilled trades are high-school-entry occupations paired with apprenticeship or long-term on-the-job training.
