Topic breakdown

What this PTCB practice test covers

The current PTCB exam outline groups content into four big domains: Medications, Federal Requirements, Patient Safety and Quality Assurance, and Order Entry and Processing. This quiz samples those broad study areas without copying official exam questions.

Study area What to review Practice examples in this tool
Medications Common drug names, classes, dosage forms, routes, storage, stability, interactions that require pharmacist attention, and high-alert medications. Drug class recognition, storage temperature, route abbreviations, high-alert examples.
Federal requirements Controlled substances basics, recalls, restricted programs, handling/disposal procedures, and general regulatory awareness. Schedule II refill rule, REMS, reverse distribution, recall details.
Patient safety and quality assurance Error prevention, pharmacist intervention, infection prevention, near misses, LASA medications, and reporting procedures. Leading zeros, Tall Man lettering, near misses, pharmacist referrals, MedWatch.
Order entry and processing Pharmacy calculations, sig codes, days' supply, prescription completeness, billing basics, inventory details, NDCs, lot numbers, and expiration dates. Dosage math, sig interpretation, NDC, FIFO, insurance BIN, days' supply.

How to use this practice test

  1. Take the 20-question quiz cold. Do not overthink it. First-pass mistakes are useful because they show what needs review.
  2. Read every explanation. Even correct answers can expose shaky areas, especially abbreviations and math.
  3. Review missed questions by category. A bad score in one category is not a moral failing. It is just a blinking dashboard light.
  4. Retake with new questions. The tool randomizes from the bank, so you can get a different mix each time.
  5. Verify official requirements. Use PTCB, your state board, and your training program for current eligibility, exam, and registration details.

Before you register for the PTCE

Use this quiz for practice, then check the official details. PTCB's CPhT pathway can involve completing a PTCB-recognized education/training program or qualifying pharmacy technician work experience, along with other eligibility and policy requirements. State boards can add their own registration, training, background-check, and scope rules, so do not assume one credential automatically covers every local requirement.

What to review before the pharmacy technician exam

Start with the official PTCB content outline. Then build your study plan around areas where small mistakes have big consequences: medication safety, calculations, prescription interpretation, federal requirement basics, and when to involve the pharmacist.

Medication safety

Review LASA drugs, high-alert medications, allergies, interaction red flags, leading-zero and trailing-zero rules, infection prevention, and error reporting.

Prescription processing

Practice sig codes, Roman numerals, days' supply, refills, product selection, NDCs, lot numbers, expiration dates, and prescription completeness.

Law and regulation basics

Know controlled-substance basics, federal requirement concepts, state variation, pharmacy records, recall workflow, and the limits of technician scope.

Pharmacy technician math topics

Pharmacy technician exam math practice should be boring in the best possible way: clean setup, correct units, no heroic guessing. Focus on:

  • Converting grams, milligrams, micrograms, liters, and milliliters
  • Calculating liquid doses from mg per mL or mg per 5 mL
  • Days' supply from quantity and directions
  • Percent strength, ratio strength, and simple concentration problems
  • Dilutions and reconstitution questions that clearly state final volume
  • Reading sig codes before doing the math, because bad translation equals garbage math

Common mistakes on pharmacy technician practice questions

  • Doing math before reading the sig. Translate the directions first, then calculate.
  • Ignoring units. mg and g are not spiritually equivalent. Convert before dividing.
  • Answering clinical questions as a technician. When a patient asks about interactions, side effects, therapy changes, or whether a drug is right for them, involve the pharmacist.
  • Forgetting state variation. Certification, registration, technician duties, and controlled-substance procedures can vary. Federal basics matter, but local rules still bite.
  • Memorizing drug trivia without context. Common classes and safety risks matter more than obscure fact nuggets from the swamp.

What to do after you finish

If you scored well, retake the quiz later with a fresh random set and keep drilling math. If you missed more than a few, do not panic. Use your missed-question review as a study map. That is the whole point.

PTCB practice test FAQ

Is this an official PTCB practice test?

No. This is an independent study-support quiz from Trade-Schools.net. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or provided by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board.

How many questions are on the official PTCE?

PTCB says the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam has 90 multiple-choice questions and a 110-minute time limit. This page uses a shorter 20-question format for quick review.

What topics should I study for the PTCB exam?

Use PTCB's official content outline as your primary map. The current outline includes Medications, Federal Requirements, Patient Safety and Quality Assurance, and Order Entry and Processing.

Can this quiz tell me whether I will pass the PTCE?

No. A short online quiz cannot predict exam performance. It can help you spot weak areas, especially math, sig codes, safety basics, inventory, and scope-of-practice judgment.

Do pharmacy technician requirements vary by state?

Yes. Pharmacy technician registration, licensing, certification, training, background-check, and scope requirements can vary by state. Verify requirements with your state board of pharmacy, PTCB, and your training program.
