Pharmacy technician math topics
Pharmacy technician exam math practice should be boring in the best possible way: clean setup, correct units, no heroic guessing. Focus on:
- Converting grams, milligrams, micrograms, liters, and milliliters
- Calculating liquid doses from mg per mL or mg per 5 mL
- Days' supply from quantity and directions
- Percent strength, ratio strength, and simple concentration problems
- Dilutions and reconstitution questions that clearly state final volume
- Reading sig codes before doing the math, because bad translation equals garbage math
Common mistakes on pharmacy technician practice questions
- Doing math before reading the sig. Translate the directions first, then calculate.
- Ignoring units. mg and g are not spiritually equivalent. Convert before dividing.
- Answering clinical questions as a technician. When a patient asks about interactions, side effects, therapy changes, or whether a drug is right for them, involve the pharmacist.
- Forgetting state variation. Certification, registration, technician duties, and controlled-substance procedures can vary. Federal basics matter, but local rules still bite.
- Memorizing drug trivia without context. Common classes and safety risks matter more than obscure fact nuggets from the swamp.
What to do after you finish
