The AMT RMA exam: what you're preparing for
AMT's 2026 RMA competency and examination specifications organize 210 questions into three work areas. The exam blueprint percentages are approximate; this practice simulator uses the listed counts for a consistent study experience.
| AMT work area | Questions | Share | What to review |
|---|---|---|---|
| I. General Medical Assisting | 65 | 31% | Body systems, medical terminology, law and ethics, patient relations. |
| II. Administrative Medical Assisting | 30 | 14% | Insurance, diagnosis/procedure coding, appointments, records, office safety. |
| III. Clinical Medical Assisting | 115 | 55% | Infection prevention, instruments, laboratory procedures, vitals, examinations, ECG, medications, first aid. |
| Total | 210 | 100% | AMT specifies a two-hour examination period; verify your own authorization notice. |
AMT's candidate handbook says some examinations may contain unscored pilot items. AMT's published competency outline also marks certain tasks as part of the broader job role but not directly assessed. Our study bank favors directly assessed concepts and does not claim to reproduce the official test.
Make your practice sessions count
A practice test is useful when it tells you what to fix, not just how many questions you guessed correctly. Take the 30-question diagnostic first and pay attention to the three domain results. Then review the original explanations and primary references for missed concepts before trying another topic session.
A practical study sequence
- Diagnose: Use the short test to identify your lowest work area.
- Review: Study the relevant official competency outline and the linked clinical or administrative references.
- Drill: Work through 15- or 20-question sets in that area and review the teaching notes for each concept.
- Recheck: Try the two-hour 210-question simulation when you want to practice test stamina and pacing.
- Confirm: Use AMT's official RMA page for current application rules, fees, and testing arrangements.
About the score: Your TSNET result is the percentage of our original practice questions you answered correctly. AMT uses a scaled score, with 70 as its passing threshold on a 0–100 scale. That does not mean 70% raw accuracy passes. Our practice percentage cannot predict your official result.
Who can take the AMT RMA exam?
AMT offers several eligibility routes, including education, approved competency/work-based learning, work experience, recent military medical training, and instructor experience. They have different documentation rules. You don't necessarily need a new college program if you already qualify through another route.
For the education route, AMT currently specifies graduation within the applicable window from an eligible accredited medical assisting program, with 720 instructional hours including at least 160 externship hours. Its competency/work-based route has additional alternatives; its experience route considers at least three qualifying years of mixed clinical and administrative work within the past seven years. Check all routes directly with AMT.
AMT RMA is a professional certification, not a blanket state license to perform clinical procedures. State scope rules and employer policies still apply.

RMA practice test questions, answered
Is this the official AMT exam?
No. This is a free independent practice tool with newly authored questions. Only AMT administers its certification exam; TSNET is not affiliated with or endorsed by AMT.
How many questions are on the RMA exam?
AMT's current public RMA outline lists 210 questions: 65 General, 30 Administrative, and 115 Clinical. It also describes a two-hour testing period. Its handbook notes that pilot questions may be unscored.
What percentage do I need to pass?
AMT requires a scaled score of 70 on its 0–100 scale. That is not equivalent to getting 70% of questions right. Your percentage on this practice tool has no validated conversion to the official AMT score.
Does AMT charge an RMA examination fee?
AMT currently lists a $150 RMA application fee, including the application, exam, and first annual fee. Verify the current fee and any retake arrangements directly before applying.
Does the practice test save my place?
When your browser permits local storage, progress stays on your device and may resume after a refresh. If storage is blocked, you can still practice, but the session may not survive reloading or changing devices. No account is required.
Should I take CCMA, CMA, or RMA?
That depends on the exam for which you are eligible and which credential your school or intended employer recognizes. Compare the three certification pathways before studying for the wrong one.
