What the official NHA CCMA exam looks like

NHA's current CCMA test plan lists 150 scored items plus 30 pretest items, with three hours to complete the exam. The current outline is based on a job analysis completed in 2022, and NHA launched the corresponding CCMA 3.0 exam in January 2024.

Clinical Patient Care is the heavyweight. NHA breaks those 84 scored items into Patient Intake and Vitals (14), General Patient Care (28), Infection Control and Safety (15), Point of Care Testing and Laboratory Procedures (9), Phlebotomy (12), and EKG and Cardiovascular Testing (6).

How to interpret your practice score

NHA reports certification results on a 200-to-500 scaled score, with 390 as the passing standard. NHA explains that scaled scoring accounts for differences in exam-form difficulty.

That means a raw percentage from this practice test cannot honestly be converted into an NHA scaled score. So we don't do that. Your results show your raw accuracy, performance by official content domain, missed questions, source-backed explanations, and suggested domains to review next.

For study planning only, we label domain performance Strong at 80% or higher, Review at 65% to 79%, and Priority review below 65%. Those are Trade-Schools.net study bands, not NHA performance categories or pass predictions.

Eligibility and retakes: the short version

NHA currently offers training/education and work-experience eligibility pathways for CCMA candidates. The work-experience route generally requires one year of supervised medical-assisting experience within the past three years or two years within the past five years, along with the handbook's other eligibility requirements. California has an additional CCMA work-experience condition in the NHA handbook.

If you do not pass, NHA's current Candidate Handbook allows up to three attempts with at least a 30-day wait between attempts. After a third unsuccessful attempt, another attempt requires a one-year wait. Each retake requires a new registration and the full exam price.

Certification knowledge is not a nationwide scope of practice

The CCMA exam tests clinical knowledge that can include injections, venipuncture, point-of-care testing, EKG procedures, and other patient-care tasks. Passing a national certification exam does not automatically authorize every medical assistant to perform every tested task in every state.

What an MA may actually do can depend on state law, delegation rules, employer policy, training, supervision, and the clinical setting. Questions in this tool therefore frame procedural tasks as authorized or delegated when that distinction matters.
