CRCST 400-Hour Experience Tracker

Check the required minimum in each HSPA experience category. HSPA requires a department manager or eligible supervisor to verify real hours; this worksheet is not official documentation and does not certify eligibility.

Enable JavaScript to use the calculator. The hour breakdown is printed in the guide below.

Deadline estimates add six calendar months to your test date. Verify the exact expiration and document-submission timing with HSPA; a limited supervisor-requested extension may be available under HSPA rules.

Your Four-Week CRCST Study Plan

Whether you're brand new or re-taking the exam, focus on what you actually missed. The three technical domains covering cleaning/decontamination, preparation/packaging, and sterilization account for 63% of the HSPA content outline. Don't ignore the other 37%, especially safety, quality assurance, and communication.

A practical four-week sequence

  1. Week 1: Outline and weak-area identification.
  2. Week 2: Decontamination, preparation and packaging.
  3. Week 3: Sterilization monitoring, storage, and patient-care equipment.
  4. Week 4: Scenario drills, focused review, and test pacing.

Suggested sequence: read the official HSPA content outline, practice one domain at a time, check every explanation against authoritative materials, and then revisit missed concepts. If you need a formal program, compare its instruction and actual externship arrangements before enrolling.

What Is on the CRCST Exam?

CRCST stands for Certified Registered Central Service Technician. It is an individual certification administered by the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA), not by the CBSPD. HSPA's current exam is computer-based, contains 150 four-option multiple-choice questions, and allows three hours. Of those 150 questions, 125 are scored and 25 are unscored pretest questions that appear throughout the test. Candidates cannot tell which items are unscored. The optional computer tutorial precedes the timed test.

HSPA's passing point is determined using formal standard-setting and psychometric procedures, not a publicly advertised 70% rule. HSPA reports an official pass/fail result and provides domain-level feedback without a percentage grade. Any score on this site is an educational practice score only.

Official CRCST exam characteristics, verified against HSPA's January 2026 handbook
Exam150 multiple-choice questions; 125 scored and 25 unscored
Time180 minutes; optional 15-minute computer tutorial
Fee$140 initial or retake exam, based on current HSPA information
ResultsOfficial pass/fail; preliminary on-screen notification; formal domain report available to unsuccessful candidates through the HSPA process
Retake waiting periodAt least six weeks after an unsuccessful attempt
ValidityCertification requires annual renewal

Current policies can change. Check the 2026 HSPA Certification Handbook before scheduling. Because the real exam has 150 items, allow roughly 72 seconds per question on average; that is a pacing illustration, not a mandated time allotment per question.

Seven Free CRCST Sample Questions With Explanations

Want to read a few examples before starting the interactive quiz? Open any question below. Each represents a different HSPA knowledge domain. The questions are original educational examples, not recalled or leaked exam questions.

Domain 1: According to CDC infection control recommendations for occupational health in sterile processing and healthcare settings, what action is required when a technician develops weeping dermatitis on the hands?
  1. Use intact gloves and continue handling equipment without notifying a supervisor
  2. Keep working with hand sanitizer as the only added precaution
  3. Exclude the technician from direct contact with patient-care equipment until the condition resolves
  4. Move to sterile storage where equipment is cleaner

Correct answer: C. Exclude the technician from direct contact with patient-care equipment until the condition resolves

CDC guidance directs healthcare facilities to exclude personnel with weeping dermatitis of the hands from direct contact with patient-care equipment until the condition is resolved.

Domain 2: Why should point-of-use preparation of reusable instruments begin promptly after a procedure?
  1. To complete terminal sterilization before the instrument leaves the operating room
  2. To remove gross soil and prevent organic residue and biofilm from drying onto instrument surfaces
  3. To bypass manual and mechanical cleaning once the tray arrives in the decontamination department
  4. To allow surgical technicians to seal contaminated instruments inside final sterilization peel pouches

Correct answer: B. To remove gross soil and prevent organic residue and biofilm from drying onto instrument surfaces

Early point-of-use preparation helps prevent blood and other debris from drying onto a device. Thorough validated cleaning is still necessary before disinfection or sterilization.

Domain 3: During lighted magnification inspection in the preparation and packaging area, a technician notices dried organic bone debris lodged inside the jaw serrations of a reusable rongeur. What is the required action?
  1. Clean the serrations with an alcohol wipe on the clean assembly table
  2. Extend the sterilization exposure time to compensate for residue
  3. Reject the instrument from assembly and return it to the decontamination area for thorough recleaning
  4. Cover the affected jaw and finish packaging

Correct answer: C. Reject the instrument from assembly and return it to the decontamination area for thorough recleaning

Residual debris means the item is not ready for packaging. Remove the instrument from clean assembly and return it for thorough cleaning and inspection under department procedures.

Domain 4: Why are biological indicators (BIs) recognized as the most definitive direct monitor of the lethality of a sterilization cycle?
  1. They record exposure time and temperature without biological material
  2. They contain standardized preparations of highly resistant bacterial spores and directly demonstrate whether cycle conditions were lethal to microorganisms
  3. They test whether the sterilizer door remained closed
  4. They eliminate the need to inspect the mechanical cycle record

Correct answer: B. They contain standardized preparations of highly resistant bacterial spores and directly demonstrate whether cycle conditions were lethal to microorganisms

Biological indicators challenge a sterilization process using resistant bacterial spores. They complement, rather than replace, physical cycle data and chemical indicator checks.

Domain 5: Why must sterile supplies delivered from a vendor be removed from their external corrugated cardboard shipping cartons in a designated break-out area before being brought into the sterile storage room?
  1. Corrugated cardboard shipping cartons are porous, cannot be cleaned, and harbor moisture, fungal spores, dust, and insects from transit
  2. Cardboard loses its shipping label when it enters sterile storage
  3. It eliminates the need to check internal package condition
  4. Shipping cartons are validated sterile barriers

Correct answer: A. Corrugated cardboard shipping cartons are porous, cannot be cleaned, and harbor moisture, fungal spores, dust, and insects from transit

Outer shipping cartons can bring dust, moisture, pests, and other contaminants into controlled storage. Open and reconcile them in the designated receiving or break-out area.

Domain 6: While preparing a reusable patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) infusion pump for distribution to a nursing unit, a technician notices that the power cord is frayed and the Preventative Maintenance (PM) inspection sticker expired two months ago. What is the required corrective action?
  1. Temporarily tape the damaged cord and route the pump for patient use
  2. Remove the pump from clinical circulation, tag it out of service per policy, and route it to Biomedical/Clinical Engineering after ensuring it is cleaned and decontaminated
  3. Return the pump to storage until the PM inspection expires again
  4. Rely on the fact it powered on yesterday and proceed

Correct answer: B. Remove the pump from clinical circulation, tag it out of service per policy, and route it to Biomedical/Clinical Engineering after ensuring it is cleaned and decontaminated

A damaged cord or out-of-date preventive-maintenance tag means the pump should be removed from clinical service. Tag it, ensure any necessary decontamination, and route it for qualified inspection.

Domain 7: According to the HSPA January 2026 Certification Handbook and CRCST Application, what happens if a candidate passes the CRCST exam under the Provisional Certification route but fails to submit manager-verified documentation of 400 hands-on SPD hours within six months of passing?
  1. The provisional status automatically converts to full certification
  2. The candidate forfeits Provisional CRCST certification and must reapply, pay the exam fee, and retake the certification examination
  3. HSPA assigns a hospital placement when six months have elapsed
  4. The candidate may replace the documented hours with proof of course completion

Correct answer: B. The candidate forfeits Provisional CRCST certification and must reapply, pay the exam fee, and retake the certification examination

The HSPA provisional route requires satisfactory documentation of 400 eligible SPD hours within six months after passing. A candidate who forfeits provisional status must reapply and retest unless HSPA has approved an applicable extension before expiration.

CRCST Eligibility: The 400-Hour Hands-On Requirement

Passing the knowledge exam is only one part of earning full CRCST status. HSPA requires 400 hands-on hours in a Sterile Processing department, completed as paid or volunteer experience and properly verified by an eligible department manager or supervisor. You cannot satisfy the requirement merely by collecting 400 hours in whichever task is easiest to access.

Full vs. provisional CRCST

Full route: Document the required 400 eligible hours completed within the five years before the exam application. Provisional route: Take and pass the exam first, then complete and submit the required 400 hours within six months after passing. Missing the provisional deadline can result in forfeiture of provisional status and the need to reapply and retest. HSPA describes a narrow, supervisor-requested extension process that must be started before expiration.

Who arranges the hours? HSPA explicitly says it does not provide placement services. You must find an authorized department. A school may help, but never assume that an online course includes a guaranteed placement. Read our clinical placement verification guide and ask a school for its actual arrangement in writing before paying.

Use the 400-hour calculator above as a personal planning aid, not the document you submit to HSPA. The official HSPA CRCST eligibility page controls what qualifies, how hours are verified, and which forms must be filed.

Do You Need Sterile Processing School to Take the CRCST Exam?

No. HSPA permits self-study and experience-based exam preparation. It does not require enrolling in a preparatory school course or buying a particular workbook before applying. A training program can still be useful if it teaches the procedures and helps you secure supervised department experience, but a school's completion certificate is not the same thing as professional CRCST certification.

If you're considering a program, verify the institution's accreditation and authorization separately from the individual's HSPA credential. Ask whether the school actually coordinates the 400 hours, what happens if no participating clinical site is available, whether the program's curriculum aligns with current HSPA domains, and whether local employers prefer HSPA CRCST or CBSPD CSPDT.

Frequently Asked Questions About the CRCST Exam

Is this an official HSPA CRCST practice test?

No. Trade-Schools.net created these original educational questions independently. HSPA has not reviewed or endorsed this tool, and no practice score is an official HSPA exam score.

How many questions are on the CRCST exam?

HSPA specifies 150 multiple-choice questions: 125 scored and 25 unscored pretest items mixed throughout the exam. You have three hours to complete it.

What percentage do I need to pass the CRCST exam?

HSPA does not publish a universal percentage cutoff. Its passing point is established through a psychometric process, and its result reports show pass/fail rather than percentage grades.

How much does the CRCST exam cost?

HSPA currently lists a $140 initial examination fee and a $140 retake fee. Check the current certification handbook and application for fees before applying.

Do I need to complete a sterile processing program before the CRCST exam?

No. HSPA allows eligible candidates to prepare through self-study and work experience without completing a school course. A course may still help with structured instruction or placement support, but course completion alone is not CRCST certification.

Can I take the CRCST exam before completing my 400 hours?

HSPA provides a provisional route. To earn full CRCST certification, you must document 400 required hands-on SPD hours within six months after passing, following HSPA rules. Missing the deadline can cause provisional status to be forfeited.

Will HSPA arrange my 400 hands-on hours?

No. HSPA states that candidates must find their own eligible Sterile Processing department. Before paying for a program, ask specifically whether the school arranges verified placements, merely offers leads, or expects you to secure your own.

What is the difference between CRCST and CSPDT?

CRCST is awarded by HSPA. CSPDT is a separate certification from CBSPD with different eligibility and renewal rules. A CBSPD-eligible school completion pathway does not waive the HSPA CRCST hands-on requirement.
