Free CMAA Practice Test and Medical Front-Desk Skills Lab
Preparing for the NHA Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) exam? Start with a 25-question diagnostic, study one of seven domains, try a timed 135-question mock, or make real-world-style front-desk decisions in a simulated clinic. No account, paywall, or email required.
Independent practice, not an NHA exam. These 135 original questions are based on public competencies, not actual or recalled NHA exam items. Practice accuracy is for study planning and does not predict NHA's scaled passing score.

CMAA exam format: What the official NHA plan says
The current published NHA CMAA test plan lists 110 scored questions, 25 unscored pretest questions, and 135 minutes. It organizes the scored questions into seven competency domains. The plan is based on a 2021 job analysis and should be checked again before your exam date.
| Official exam domain | Scored items | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Foundational Knowledge | 10 | 9.1% |
| Communication and Professionalism | 21 | 19.1% |
| Medical Law, Ethics, and Compliance | 17 | 15.5% |
| Scheduling | 16 | 14.5% |
| Patient Encounter | 21 | 19.1% |
| Billing and Revenue Cycle | 11 | 10.0% |
| Medical Practice Administrative Procedures and Logistics | 14 | 12.7% |
| Total scored | 110 | 100% |
The official exam has a 390 out of 500 scaled-score passing standard. NHA uses scaled scoring to account for exam-form differences. A 390 score is not a simple conversion from a fixed raw percent correct. Our results deliberately report only how you did on these independent practice questions. Read the latest NHA Candidate Handbook for authoritative scoring rules.
How the practice modes work
Quick check and domain drills: The 25-question diagnostic approximates the official blueprint's domain mix. Domain drills provide ten focused questions each. You get immediate explanations and references so a wrong answer becomes a study opportunity.
Full timed mock: Answer 135 original questions in 135 minutes. A set of 110 questions contributes to the practice score; 25 extra experimental practice questions do not. These extras are not actual NHA pretest items, and our test is not calibrated to an NHA exam form.
Scores, flags, and progress are stored on your device if browser storage is available, and you may clear them. This tool does not require personal medical information. Real-life scenarios always require your facility's policies and qualified clinical staff.
A smarter way to study for the CMAA exam
- Start with the diagnostic. Treat missed answers as a roadmap, not a verdict. Short domains have few questions, so don't overinterpret tiny samples.
- Study what you can actually do. Practice professional communication, records handling, scheduling choices, and insurance terminology, not just memorized definitions.
- Use the skills lab. The seven fictional cases test recognizing when an administrative task must be escalated to clinical, privacy, or billing personnel.
- Review primary sources. Check the NHA exam plan, HHS privacy guidance, CMS notices, and clinic-specific policies when an explanation raises a question.
- Finish with the timed mock. Review domain results and every unanswered question. No score here guarantees what will happen on the official examination.
CMAA exam requirements and renewal
NHA generally requires a recognized high-school credential plus an eligible education or supervised-experience pathway. Its CMAA eligibility page describes training completed within the preceding five years, one year of supervised relevant work within the preceding three years, or two years of supervised relevant work within the preceding five years. Candidates must satisfy the details of their actual pathway; these are not blanket exemptions from other requirements.
For eligible high-school students, NHA's current provisional-certification guidance permits CMAA testing up to 18 months before graduation. The 12-month pre-graduation window applies to ExCPT pharmacy technician candidates, not CMAA.
Check conversion deadlines directly: NHA's October 5, 2026 handbook contains conflicting language about the expiration period for provisional credentials across different sections. Contact NHA about a deadline that affects your eligibility instead of relying on a simplified summary here.
Standard NHA credentials are typically valid for two years. NHA currently lists 10 continuing education credits and a $195 renewal fee for CMAA and other applicable non-pharmacy certificates. Exam registration fees and eligible discounts can change; check the official NHA portal for your current amount before purchasing. See NHA renewal instructions.
CMAA vs. CCMA: Don't prepare for the wrong certification
CMAA emphasizes medical office administration: scheduling, patient registration, communication, records, confidentiality, and revenue-cycle tasks. CCMA focuses on clinical medical assisting and related patient-care competencies. The certifications are not interchangeable. Neither one creates a universal license to diagnose, prescribe, or independently perform clinical tasks.

Will the certification improve your career options?
The CMAA credential can help demonstrate relevant knowledge, but it does not guarantee employment or a pay increase. As a broader benchmark, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a national median wage of $45,930 in May 2025 for Medical Secretaries and Administrative Assistants (SOC 43-6013), including workers who do not hold CMAA certification. In its 2025–2035 projections, BLS estimates 4.8% employment growth and about 89,200 annual openings for this occupational group. These are not estimates of a CMAA-specific pay premium or guaranteed job opportunities.
Whether school is worthwhile depends on your existing experience, local employer requirements, and the quality of a program's hands-on administrative training. Ask schools about medical terminology, EHR practice, scheduling, billing workflows, exam eligibility, and any required practical components.
Frequently asked questions
Is the CMAA practice test free?
Yes. All practice modes and the skills lab are free and require no account or email address.
Is this an official NHA CMAA practice test?
No. It is independently created from the publicly available NHA test plan. Trade-Schools.net is not sponsored, approved, or endorsed by NHA.
Is 80% on this practice test a passing score?
No. A practice percentage is a study signal only. NHA uses a scaled passing score of 390 out of 500, and these questions have not been equated with official exam items.
Do I need the CMAA exam to work as a medical receptionist?
Not always. Employers set their own requirements, and state rules can affect job duties. CMAA is a voluntary industry certification, not a nationwide occupational license.
