Lineman vs. Electrician: Pay, Training, Work, and Which Trade Fits You?

One trade works mainly on electrical systems in buildings and facilities. The other keeps utility transmission and distribution systems alive. The better choice depends less on which job sounds tougher and more on which work life actually fits you.

The quick answer

Lineworkers have the higher national median wage: $95,320 versus $63,190 for electricians in May 2025. Electricians have the much larger labor market: BLS projects about 72,700 electrician openings per year from 2025 to 2035, compared with about 10,900 for electrical power-line installers and repairers.

Linework can be a strong fit if you genuinely want outdoor utility work, heights, heavy equipment, storm response, and possible travel. Electrician work can be a better fit if you want a broader local job market, building and industrial systems, more specialty options, and a more established route toward self-employment.

What is the actual difference between a lineman and an electrician?

The easiest way to think about it is buildings and facilities versus the power grid.

Electricians generally install, maintain, and repair wiring, controls, fixtures, and equipment in homes, businesses, factories, and other facilities. O*NET lists tasks such as installing conduit, pulling wire, connecting circuit breakers and transformers, reading plans, testing systems, and repairing electrical equipment.

Electrical power-line installers and repairers, commonly called lineworkers or linemen, work on the transmission and distribution infrastructure that moves electricity to customers. O*NET lists tasks such as climbing poles or using truck-mounted buckets, stringing conductors, installing and repairing distribution and transmission equipment, setting poles, operating lifting equipment, and responding to damaged lines.

Both trades use electrical theory and serious safety practices, but they are not interchangeable jobs. The tools, physical demands, work environments, training systems, and regulatory requirements can be very different.

Who makes more: linemen or electricians?

On national median wages, lineworkers come out well ahead.

BLS also reports a 10th-to-90th-percentile range of $42,640 to $108,510 for electricians and $51,470 to $128,690 for electrical power-line installers and repairers.

Important: Do not turn the 10th and 90th percentile figures into "beginner" and "experienced" salaries. They are points in the national wage distribution, not career stages.

And do not compare the BLS median with a social-media story about a massive storm paycheck. BLS says OEWS wages are straight-time gross pay and exclude overtime pay and shift differentials. Actual annual earnings can be higher when overtime is substantial, but the amount varies too much by employer, contract, location, weather events, and hours worked to promise a national storm-pay number.

Which trade has more job opportunities?

Electricians have the much larger labor market.

BLS projects 2025-35 employment growth of 9.2% for electricians and 10.3% for electrical power-line installers and repairers. Both are strong growth rates. Projected annual openings tell a different part of the story:

  • Electricians: about 72,700 openings per year.
  • Lineworkers: about 10,900 openings per year.

That is roughly 6.7 electrician openings for every projected lineworker opening nationally. It does not mean lineworker jobs are scarce. It means electrician is a much larger occupation with more ways to work across construction, maintenance, manufacturing, service, and specialty electrical markets.

There is also a meaningful ownership difference. BLS 2025 Employment Projections data lists 7.1% of electricians as self-employed versus 0.3% of electrical power-line installers and repairers. Starting an electrical contracting business still requires the right experience, licensing, capital, insurance, and local approvals, but business ownership is clearly a more established path within the electrician occupation.

Training: ignore the "15 weeks vs. one year" shortcut

One of the least useful ways to compare these careers is to compare the length of a short school program and pretend that equals the time required to become fully qualified.

Electrician training

BLS says most electricians learn through a four- or five-year apprenticeship. Apprentices typically receive about 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training each year plus technical instruction. Some people attend technical school before or during the apprenticeship process.

Trade school can be useful preparation, but it does not automatically make someone a licensed journey-level electrician. Licensing rules and the amount or type of experience required vary by state and locality.

Lineworker training

BLS describes technical instruction and long-term on-the-job training as typical, and says apprenticeships are common. Specific apprenticeship structures vary.

For example, the Northwest Line Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee currently describes its outside lineman apprenticeship as a 7,000-hour program completed in about 3.5 years. SELCAT likewise requires 7,000 hours of on-the-job training plus at least 144 hours of related instruction in each of three years.

Those are useful examples of registered outside-line apprenticeship structures, not a universal national rule for every utility, employer, or apprenticeship program.

Short line schools can prepare applicants for entry-level work and apprenticeship competition. NW Line JATC's VOLTA school, for example, explicitly describes its role as preparing students for entry-level outside-line work. Completing a short climbing school does not make someone a journey-level lineworker.

Licensing and the CDL question

Electrician licensing

There is no single federal electrician license. BLS says most states require electricians to be licensed, and requirements vary by state and locality. Before choosing a program or apprenticeship, check the licensing authority where you expect to work.

Lineworker licensing

Do not assume lineworkers follow the same state licensing model as electricians. Requirements differ by jurisdiction, employer, utility, and apprenticeship system.

Texas, for example, has a state Journeyman Lineman license. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation currently requires either 7,000 hours in a U.S. Department of Labor-approved apprenticeship or qualifying lineworker experience under its alternative route, along with the other state requirements.

That makes Texas a useful reminder that a blanket statement such as "linemen are not licensed" is too broad.

Does a lineman need a CDL?

A CDL is a driver's license for specific commercial motor vehicles, not a professional lineworker license.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration says a Class A CDL applies to qualifying vehicle combinations at 26,001 pounds or more when the towed unit exceeds 10,000 pounds. Class B covers qualifying heavy single vehicles at 26,001 pounds or more, subject to the federal definitions and state licensing process.

BLS says lineworkers who drive heavy vehicles usually need a CDL. Some outside-line apprenticeships go further: NW Line JATC currently requires a Class A CDL with no E restriction, and SELCAT requires a Class A CDL with an air-brake endorsement for applicants.

So the useful answer is: a CDL is very common and may be an entry requirement for the program or employer you want, but the federal CDL rule is tied to the vehicle you operate, not to the job title "lineman."

Work environment: this is where the choice gets real

The salary table is interesting. Your Tuesday in February matters more.

Electrician work

Electricians can work indoors and outdoors. BLS notes that they may work in homes, businesses, factories, and construction sites, including cramped spaces and high places. Work may involve evenings, weekends, and overtime.

O*NET's current occupation profile also shows that the job is physically active. Electricians commonly climb ladders or scaffolds, work with their hands continuously, and may work in cramped or awkward positions. So "electrician" does not mean "comfortable indoor job."

Compared with linework, however, electrician careers offer more opportunities to build a work life around buildings, facilities, local service territories, maintenance departments, or an eventual contracting business.

Lineworker work

Linework is much more consistently exposed to the elements and elevation.

In O*NET's current work-context data for electrical power-line installers and repairers, 100% of respondents reported working outdoors in all weather every day, 83% reported exposure to high places every day, and 93% reported hazardous conditions every day.

BLS also notes that lineworkers work at great heights and face serious hazards from high-voltage electricity. In emergencies or after storms and natural disasters, they may have to travel to affected areas and work long hours for several days in a row.

That does not mean every lineworker is permanently on the road. Utility employees and outside contractors can have very different travel patterns. But if heights, bad weather, emergency response, or unpredictable travel are hard no's, linework is probably the wrong trade to romanticize from a salary chart.

Which trade is more dangerous?

Both are safety-sensitive electrical trades with potentially fatal hazards.

BLS identifies falls, electrical shocks, burns, and other injuries among electrician hazards. For electrical power-line installers, BLS emphasizes high-voltage electrical hazards, falls from high places, and the physical demands of outdoor line construction and repair.

Linework plainly combines several high-consequence risk factors at once: energized utility systems, elevation, heavy equipment, traffic exposure, weather, and emergency work. But we would not turn old fatality counts from different years into a neat "X times more dangerous" statistic. That looks precise while mixing workforce denominators and time periods in ways that can mislead.

The practical decision question is simpler: are you comfortable building a career in which heights, severe weather, heavy equipment, and high-voltage utility infrastructure are routine parts of the work environment?

Schedule, travel, and family-life differences

Electricians are not guaranteed a Monday-to-Friday schedule. BLS says schedules can include evenings and weekends, and overtime is common on construction sites and during scheduled maintenance. Self-employed electricians may have more control over their schedules, although running a business brings its own version of "free time."

Lineworkers may also work standard schedules during normal operations, but the occupation carries a bigger emergency-response component. BLS says storms and natural disasters can require travel and long hours for several days. Outside-line apprenticeships may add geographic mobility requirements. NW Line JATC, for example, requires apprentices to work across its multi-state jurisdiction and pay their own travel expenses.

If sleeping at home most nights is a major priority, investigate the exact employer and apprenticeship model before choosing linework. "Utility lineworker" and "traveling outside-line contractor" can produce very different lifestyles.

Can an electrician become a lineman, or vice versa?

Yes, but do not assume one credential automatically transfers into the other trade.

An electrician brings useful electrical theory, safety habits, troubleshooting skills, and construction experience into linework. A lineworker brings strong electrical safety, rigging, equipment, and power-distribution experience into other electrical work.

But apprenticeship and licensing systems care about the type of documented experience, not just whether both jobs involve electricity. NW Line JATC, for example, says previous experience is credited only in special situations, generally involving transfers from other registered line-construction programs or qualified lineworkers.

Likewise, a lineworker moving into licensed premises wiring needs to satisfy the electrician requirements of the jurisdiction where they plan to work. Do not count on utility line hours automatically satisfying electrician licensing requirements.

So, should you become a lineman or an electrician?

Choose electrician if you are more interested in building, commercial, industrial, or controls work; want the larger national labor market; value a path toward local service or contracting; and would rather not make major heights, storm response, and severe weather core parts of the job.

Choose lineworker if you genuinely want power transmission or distribution work; are comfortable with heights and rough weather; can accept emergency callouts, storm restoration, and possible regional travel; and are willing to qualify for heavy-vehicle driving when your target program or employer requires it.

If your entire case for linework is "the median pay is higher," keep researching. The job you can actually tolerate for years is a better career than the one with the prettier salary number.
