21 Jobs That Don't Require Much Math: Low-Math Careers That Pay Well

You do not need to love algebra to build a solid career. You do, however, need a more honest filter than a listicle promising jobs with literally zero numbers.

The quick answer

Many careers use little mathematical problem-solving in day-to-day work. We screened current O*NET 31.0 ratings, then paired the results with May 2025 BLS wages and the new 2025-35 employment projections. Of the 21 careers in this guide, 18 have national median pay above the $50,980 median for all occupations.

Low math is not no math. You may still count, measure, track time, read a gauge, work with percentages, or enter numbers into software. The point is to avoid careers where math itself is a major part of solving the job's problems.

What “Low Math” Actually Means

There is no serious career where numbers disappear completely. A flight attendant works with times and passenger counts. A painter estimates area and material quantities. A dental hygienist records measurements. A truck driver tracks hours, weights, mileage, and fuel. The useful question is whether mathematics is central to solving the job's problems.

That distinction matters because abstract classroom math and workplace numeracy are not the same thing. Someone who hated algebra may be perfectly comfortable reading a tape measure, tracking a deadline, comparing two values, or using a digital tool that performs the underlying calculation.

One useful rule: do not choose a career because somebody on the internet called it “math-free.” Check three separate things: the math required to enter the training program, the math tested for a license or credential, and the math used during ordinary work.

How We Measured Math Demand

We used two distinct O*NET 31.0 descriptors. Mathematics skill is “using mathematics to solve problems.” Mathematics knowledge covers knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications. O*NET reports both Importance and Level ratings rather than one magical career-math number.

  1. Primary screen: We reviewed occupations with an O*NET Mathematics Skill Importance rating of 2.25 or lower. In the current data, 2.25 is the 40th-percentile cutoff among 748 standard .00 O*NET occupations with complete math skill/knowledge ratings.
  2. Secondary check: We examined Mathematics Knowledge, the Level ratings, and current O*NET task statements. That catches edge cases where math may not be frequent but the math that does appear is more technical.
  3. Labor-market check: We joined only clean standard SOC matches to May 2025 BLS OEWS wages and the 2025-35 BLS Employment Projections.
  4. Editorial review: We removed occupations that would make the headline misleading, even if one score happened to squeak under the screen.

We deliberately do not collapse the four O*NET ratings into a proprietary “low-math score.” The underlying numbers are more useful than fake precision.

O*NET Importance uses a 1-5 scale; Level uses a 0-7 scale. Lower values mean the descriptor is less important or required at a lower level. Our cutoff is an editorial screening rule, not an O*NET designation.

High-Paying Jobs That Don't Require Much Math

If pay is your main filter, low-math careers are not limited to low-wage service work. The bigger catch is that high pay usually moves the difficulty somewhere else: more education, harder licensing, intense people work, competitive portfolios, physical demands, or responsibility.

Lawyer

$159,670 median pay

Math problem-solving is relatively unimportant in O*NET, but the trade is obvious: a professional degree, bar admission, dense reading, deadlines, and high-stakes judgment. Some specialties, such as tax or finance-heavy practice, use more quantitative work.

Power plant operator

$102,040 median pay | high school diploma typically

This is the surprise in the dataset. O*NET rates mathematical problem-solving relatively low, while the work centers on monitoring equipment, readings, controls, and operating conditions. The trade-off is long-term on-the-job training, safety responsibility, and a projected 5.1% employment decline.

Occupational therapist

$100,330 median pay | +14.8% growth

OTs use measurements and assessment data, but their work centers more on function, adaptation, patient goals, and clinical reasoning. The barrier is a master's degree and state licensure, not advanced workplace math.

Dental hygienist

$98,100 median pay | associate's degree

This is one of the strongest combinations of pay and relatively low math in the data. Daily numeracy is mostly measurement and charting, although science prerequisites and licensing still matter.

Detective or criminal investigator

$93,790 median pay

Math is not the main challenge. Evidence, interviewing, documentation, legal procedure, and judgment are. BLS lists a high school diploma as typical entry education but also less than five years of related experience, so this is usually not a first-job career.

Human resources specialist

$75,940 median pay | 73,700 annual openings

Most numeracy is practical business data: dates, headcounts, compensation, benefits, and reports. The larger demands are employment rules, communication, recruiting, and handling sensitive people issues.

Editors work constantly with numbers, but mostly timecodes, durations, frame counts, and dimensions rather than abstract math. O*NET rates math problem-solving as relatively low in importance.

Low-Math Careers Without a Bachelor's Degree

This is where the list gets especially useful. Based on BLS typical-entry education, 16 of the 21 careers above do not typically require a bachelor's degree. That does not mean they are instant-entry jobs. Some require an associate degree, a postsecondary nondegree award, licensing, substantial on-the-job training, or related experience.

Strong options include power plant operator ($102,040), dental hygienist ($98,100), court reporter ($72,420), occupational therapy assistant ($72,300), physical therapist assistant ($68,380), flight attendant ($63,580), paralegal ($62,890), computer user support specialist ($61,860), truck driver ($58,640), and massage therapist ($58,450).

If speed matters more than maximum pay, compare this list with short certificate programs that pay well and six-month training options. Just remember that “short training” and “low math” are separate filters.

Fast does not always mean easy. Truck driving can involve long hours and strict safety rules. Massage therapy is physically demanding. Court reporting requires extreme transcription speed and accuracy. Low math merely removes one kind of friction.

Healthcare Careers With Relatively Low Math Demand

Healthcare is where “no math” articles can get reckless. Patient care involves measurements, dosages, device readings, or quantitative documentation somewhere in the system. The safer question is which roles keep mathematical problem-solving relatively secondary.

  • Dental hygienists: low O*NET math ratings, strong pay, associate-degree entry. Dental hygienist programs

  • Physical therapist assistants: basic measurement and patient data, $68,380 median pay, and 23.0% projected growth.
  • Massage therapists: very low math knowledge ratings, with practical numeracy centered on time, prices, and simple ratios. Massage therapy programs

Medical assisting did not make our low-math screen. Current O*NET rates Mathematics Skill Importance and Level at 2.62, higher than the 2.25 primary screen used for this guide. That does not make medical assisting a math-heavy career. It does mean we would rather leave an edge case out than slap “no math” on it because the keyword looks nice.

Trades That Use More Math Than People Expect

Trade work is not a universal escape hatch from math. Precision construction and mechanical systems routinely combine measurement with geometry, formulas, tolerances, or technical values. Here are several occupations we intentionally did not put on the low-math list.

These are not “bad” careers for someone who struggled with school math. They simply demand more quantitative comfort than the low-math label suggests. Applied trade math often feels very different from classroom algebra because it is tied to a physical result.

School Math vs. Job Math: Check the Gatekeepers

A career can be low-math on the job and still make you take math in school. Degree programs may include general-education quantitative requirements, science courses, statistics, or program-specific prerequisites. Licensing and certification exams can add another layer.

That is why O*NET job ratings should never be treated as a promise about a college curriculum. For example, dental hygiene may feel measurement-heavy rather than calculation-heavy in practice, but applicants still need to meet each program's prerequisites. Occupational therapy has low workplace math ratings but requires graduate education. Court reporting has exceptionally low O*NET math ratings, yet its core skill barrier is transcription speed and accuracy.

Before you pay a deposit: pull the actual program curriculum and admissions prerequisites. Look for college algebra, statistics, chemistry, physics, dosage calculation, technical math, and entrance-exam requirements. Ask whether those courses are prerequisites, part of the program, or simply recommended.

What If You're “Bad at Math”?

Start by separating math anxiety from career ability. Research consistently finds a negative relationship between math anxiety and math performance, and a 2022 meta-analysis found evidence that working memory plays a meaningful role in that relationship. In plain English: pressure and anxiety can make mathematical tasks harder in the moment.

That does not prove that someone who struggled in algebra will breeze through every applied calculation. It does mean “I was bad at math in school” is not a precise career diagnosis. A better test is the actual numeracy the job demands.

  • If you dislike abstract symbolic math but are fine with measurement, some hands-on careers may still fit.
  • If fractions and unit conversions are the problem, test those skills before choosing a measurement-heavy trade.
  • If timed tests trigger the problem, investigate tutoring, prerequisite refreshers, and testing supports before abandoning a career that otherwise fits.
  • If you genuinely want to avoid quantitative work, prioritize careers with low O*NET math ratings and review the program curriculum before enrolling.

7 Questions to Ask a School Before Choosing a Low-Math Career Program

  1. What math courses are prerequisites? Ask for course numbers, not “basic math” as a vague answer.
  2. Is there math inside the occupational courses? Technical math can hide inside labs, pharmacology, electrical theory, billing, or measurement courses.
  3. What math appears on certification or licensing exams? A low-math job can still have a quantitative credentialing gate.
  4. Can I see a sample syllabus or first-term course list? This is more useful than a marketing brochure.
  5. What tutoring or academic support is available? One required math course should not automatically kill a good career fit.
  6. What percentage of training is hands-on? Applied learning can feel very different from abstract classroom work.
  7. What else is hard about this career? Physical strain, shift work, emotional load, licensing, competition, or public-facing stress may matter more than math.

FAQ: Jobs That Don't Require Much Math

What jobs require the least math?

Current O*NET data puts court reporters and simultaneous captioners, writers and authors, postal mail carriers, flight attendants, massage therapists, and several legal or support occupations among jobs where mathematical problem-solving is relatively unimportant. Every job still involves some numeracy, even if it is only time, counts, prices, measurements, or basic data.

What high-paying jobs do not require much math?

Among the occupations in this guide, lawyers, occupational therapists, dental hygienists, power plant operators, detectives and criminal investigators, writers and authors, HR specialists, and film and video editors all had May 2025 national median pay above $74,000. Their education and experience requirements vary sharply.

What trades use the least math?

Construction painting is one of the cleaner low-math fits in our current O*NET screen. Truck driving also uses relatively little mathematical problem-solving, although drivers still work with time, weight, mileage, and fuel. Electrician, carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, roofing, tile setting, and welding involve more math than many generic career lists suggest.

Are there healthcare jobs that do not require much math?

Yes, but low math does not mean zero measurement or zero science. Dental hygienists, occupational therapy assistants, physical therapist assistants, massage therapists, dental assistants, and phlebotomists all score relatively low on O*NET's Mathematics skill-importance measure. Program prerequisites and licensing requirements still need to be checked separately.

What if I was bad at math in school?

School math performance and job fit are not the same thing. Research links math anxiety with worse math performance and working-memory strain, especially under pressure. The safer move is not to assume you can never handle numbers, but to check the exact math used in the training program, licensing exam, and daily job before ruling a career in or out.
