Your topic-by-topic study plan
Before you book an actual TABE test, confirm:
- Which TABE form or other assessment your program uses.
- Whether the exam is for admission, placement, or completion after enrollment.
- Which subjects and assigned test level you need.
- Whether the requirement is reported as a scale score, grade-based score, or something else.
- Your program's exact required score and whether alternate exams are accepted.
- Where testing is held, whether there are fees, and which photo ID to bring.
- Retake waiting periods, tutoring, and accommodations.
- Whether you qualify for a waiver or exemption.
Interested in career training, too?
If your assessment is connected to a training program, compare the kind of preparation it actually offers. Not every school or course uses TABE.

What is the TABE test, and who needs it?
TABE stands for the Test of Adult Basic Education. It assesses reading, mathematics, and language skills that adult education and workforce programs use for placement, progress tracking, or local eligibility rules. It is not a professional license or a nationally uniform trade-school entrance exam. DRC describes the current TABE 13&14 assessment.
The reason you take the exam matters at least as much as the score. At Tarrant County College in Texas, TABE is part of eligibility review for specific health sciences certificates. In Florida, state law addresses basic-skills testing in covered career certificate programs after admission, with proficiency required for completion and statutory exemptions. Adult education centers may use the results to place learners into appropriate classes. Those are different decisions, so there is no single national passing score. See verified examples below and general trade-school admissions requirements.
TABE 13&14 format: subjects, levels, and time limits
DRC lists publicly available 13&14 blueprints and practice materials for Levels E, M, D, and A. The official scoring guide also references Level L, so your testing center should confirm which forms it actually administers. Our pilot focuses on M and D; it does not cover every content domain or difficulty range of an official exam.
| Subtest | Official number of items | Official maximum time | Question formats |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading | 39 to 42 (depends on E/M/D/A) | 100 minutes (50 + 50) | Multiple choice and evidence-based selected response |
| Mathematics | 40 | 60 minutes (45 + 15) | Multiple choice and gridded response |
| Language | 33 | 50 minutes | Multiple choice |
| Locator | 16 per subject | Reading 35; Math 20; Language 20 minutes | Level-placement instrument |

TABE 13&14 versus 11&12
The updated forms use shorter reading passages and continuous scrolling for online reading. Reading includes questions that require selecting evidence, math includes numeric gridded answers, and language stays multiple choice. DRC reports that the Desmos calculator is used in the updated online math exam. Whether and when calculator access is allowed is governed by the testing center and the official administration rules, not the labels on our practice questions. For current on-screen tool practice, use the official DRC Online Tools Training.
What our Math, Reading, and Language questions cover
Mathematics
Fractions, decimals, ratios, operations, algebra, geometry, and interpreting data. Some practice questions ask for a typed number or fraction. A worked explanation follows each answer.
Reading
Central ideas, details, vocabulary in context, comparisons, and evidence. Some questions have Part A (an interpretation) and Part B (the sentence that supports it).
Language
Grammar, punctuation, sentence clarity, paragraph organization, tone, and writing for a purpose. These are all multiple-choice questions.
These 90 original questions sample adult-relevant reading and academic skills. They are independently authored, not calibrated by DRC, and not a psychometrically validated substitute for the actual assessment. For a real format preview at other levels, use DRC's sample item packets.
How TABE scores work: scale scores and NRS levels
Official TABE results are not just a percent correct. DRC converts responses on its calibrated forms into subject-specific scale scores and reports an educational functioning level under the National Reporting System (NRS). A scale score must come from an official test administration. Below are DRC's published 13&14 scale score ranges, not score predictions from this practice tool.
| NRS Level | Reading | Math | Language | Forms reporting this range* |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 310–441 | 310–448 | 310–457 | E |
| 2 | 442–500 | 449–495 | 458–510 | E, M |
| 3 | 501–535 | 496–536 | 511–546 | E, M, D |
| 4 | 536–575 | 537–595 | 547–583 | M, D, A |
| 5 | 576–616 | 596–656 | 584–630 | D, A |
| 6 | 617–800 | 657–800 | 631–800 | A |
*The published table summarizes E/M/D/A reporting windows; the official scoring guide additionally references Level L. Individual forms cannot report across every range. Scores marked O/R indicate the student tested outside the reporting window below the target; a single * marks the highest reportable level for that form. Does the TABE have a passing score?
Not one national passing score. An adult education program may use the score for placement; another college may impose a published admissions cutoff for a specific certificate; a public career program may instead have a completion standard. Some institutions report a grade-based expectation, and DRC cautions that grade-based comparisons are estimates, not a valid way to measure learning gains. Always ask your admissions or testing office for the exact current policy and test edition. See DRC's grade-based guidance (PDF).
Where TABE is actually required: published program policies
These examples are a research sample, not a nationwide rule or a list of TSNET partner schools. Requirements can change between the page being reviewed and your enrollment date. Confirm them with the institution before paying for a class or scheduling a test. Policies reviewed October 15, 2026; where a source doesn't publish the test edition or cutoff, we say so.
| Institution / program | TABE role | Published detail | Verify with the institution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tarrant County College, TX Medical Coder, PCT, Pharmacy Technician, Phlebotomy | Eligibility before certificate enrollment | Reading, Math, English; advisor referral; score reviewed with advisor | Cutoff, fee, form, and assigned level not stated publicly |
| Carteret Community College, NC Phlebotomy | Admission prerequisite | TABE Reading 575 or higher | Test edition, level, retake policy, and fee not specified on the program page |
| Western Piedmont CC, NC Nurse Aide I | Before class registration | At least a ninth-grade TABE result (as described by college) | How the college interprets grade-based requirement on its current form |
| Western Piedmont CC, NC Nurse Aide II | Admission prerequisite | At least a 10th-grade Reading result (college wording) | Test edition and official score interpretation; other prerequisites also apply |
| University at Buffalo EOC, NY Phlebotomy | Assessment before classes begin | TABE Reading and Math; tuition-free public training | Cutoff, edition, assigned level not stated publicly |
| Pasco-Hernando State College, FL Medical Assistant / Welding | Covered career-certificate basic-skills exit requirement | Published program table shows grade 10 in three subjects for Medical Assistant; grade 9 for Welding | PHSC's page still labels 11&12 as latest. Confirm current form, test level, and waivers |
| Pasco-Hernando State College, FL Medical Coder/Biller | Covered program completion requirement | Published table lists Level A and grade 9 Math / grade 11 Reading and Language | Whether table has been translated to current 13&14 standards; verify before testing |
| Pasco-Hernando State College, FL Phlebotomy | No TABE required for this program | Explicit exemption stated on program page | Other clinical, health, and background requirements still apply |
| Pinellas Technical College, FL HVAC/R 1 IET | Basic-skills requirement for completion | No TABE-level minimum to enter; completion requires meeting basic-skills goals or an applicable qualifying certification | Current approved assessments and individualized exemption rules |
Florida's 2026 statute, section 1004.91, requires a designated basic-skills assessment within six weeks after entry into covered career programs of 450 or more hours, with mastery required for completion unless the learner qualifies for an exemption. The law includes specific exemptions for qualifying degrees, documented postsecondary readiness, approved industry credentials, registered apprenticeships, and other statutory categories. It does not say every trade school applicant must pass TABE before enrolling.
Before you pay for training or register for the exam
- Confirm the precise requirement. Ask admissions whether it's TABE 13&14, a different edition, HESI A2, TEAS, a state placement test, or no test at all.
- Confirm when it matters. Is the assessment required before admission, used to place you into support classes, or required before you receive a certificate?
- Ask for the exact standard. Which subject(s), test level, minimum score, and test date apply? If someone quotes a grade level, ask how it is interpreted with current forms.
- Check legitimate alternatives. Ask about waiver eligibility, approved alternate assessments, learning support, accommodations, and retakes.
- Compare what training prepares you to do. A basic-skills assessment does not by itself establish career licensure, program accreditation, or professional certification eligibility. Use our school-selection guide to evaluate the actual education investment.

TABE practice test FAQ
Is this an official TABE practice test?
No. These are original practice questions written independently to exercise relevant adult reading, math, and language skills. They are not official test items and do not produce an official TABE result.
What score do I need to pass TABE?
There is no universal TABE passing score. Your specific program may publish its own minimum, or use results for placement rather than admission. Ask the institution for the currently accepted form and requirement.
How long does the official TABE 13&14 take?
DRC lists maximum times of 100 minutes for Reading, 60 minutes for Math, and 50 minutes for Language on the E/M/D/A core subtests. Your center may administer only certain subjects or split sessions.
Can I use a calculator on TABE math?
DRC reports Desmos use in the updated online Mathematics test. Exact access depends on official administration rules; check your center's instructions and practice with DRC's Online Tools Training rather than assuming all questions allow a calculator.
Can I retake the test or get an exemption?
Retake schedules and exemptions depend on the administering institution and applicable rules. For example, PHSC publishes its own retake waits, while current Florida law lists specific completion-rule exemptions for covered programs.
