G1 Maintenance and Light Repair Practice Test
This free G1 practice module focuses on maintenance and light-repair tasks across engine systems, transmissions and driveline, suspension/steering, brakes, electrical, and HVAC. G1 is a broad early-career test rather than a miniature version of one A-series exam. It uses 12 original questions with explanations and study feedback. It does not reproduce ASE test questions.
What the G1 test covers
The current ASE specification gives the G1 Maintenance and Light Repair certification test 55 scored questions. The initial test form contains 65 total questions, including 10 unscored research questions, with 90 minutes of testing time.
| Content area | Scored questions | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Engine Systems | 9 | 16% |
| Automatic Transmission/Transaxle | 4 | 7% |
| Manual Drive Train and Axles | 6 | 11% |
| Suspension and Steering | 13 | 24% |
| Brakes | 11 | 20% |
| Electrical | 8 | 15% |
| Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning | 4 | 7% |

This drill uses original questions tagged to the same broad content areas used in the current official test specification. Retake it to reshuffle the question and answer order.
How to use the results without lying to yourself
Learning mode
Use this when you are still building the material. You get the rationale immediately, which makes every miss a study prompt instead of a tiny emotional crisis in a blue rectangle.
Exam-style mode
Use this when you want cleaner self-testing. Feedback stays hidden until the end so you cannot use one explanation to answer the next question.
TSNET labels your practice performance as Needs focused review, Building, Strong practice performance, or Very strong practice performance. Those labels are ours. ASE does not publish a simple universal raw percentage that lets a third-party quiz translate 80% here into “you will pass.”
What to review after this G1 practice set
Use the domain breakdown in your result as the priority list. A weak domain is not just “more questions to memorize.” Go back to system operation, the inputs and outputs you would measure, and the sequence that separates one plausible fault from another.
Take the mixed ASE diagnostic or switch to another A-series/G1 module to test a different system.
Passing a test is not the whole ASE certification requirement
ASE certification combines a passing test result with relevant hands-on work experience. ASE's current work-experience instructions list one year of Repair Technician experience for G1 and two years for A1-A9. Most candidates can test before the experience is finished, but ASE does not award the credential until the experience requirement is also approved.
Formal automotive education can substitute for part of the experience requirement in specific cases. See our ASE certification guide for the current experience, fee, retest, and certification-process details rather than bloating every practice page with the same logistics.
ASE practice test FAQ
Is this an official ASE practice test?
No. Trade-Schools.net is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by ASE. We use the public test specifications to organize study topics, but every practice item is original.
Can my score here tell me whether I will pass an ASE test?
No. ASE does not publish a simple universal raw percentage-to-pass number for the current professional A-series tests. Use your TSNET score to identify study gaps, not as a pass prediction.
Which ASE tests are required for Master Automobile Technician status?
ASE identifies A1 through A8 as the Automobile tests required for Master Automobile Technician status, along with the applicable work-experience requirement. A9 is not required for Automobile Master status.
Can I take an ASE test before I finish the work-experience requirement?
For most tests, yes. ASE lets candidates test before completing the experience requirement, but certification is not awarded until the relevant work experience is documented and approved.
