How architectural scale conversion works
A scaled drawing represents a larger real-world distance using a consistent ratio. The calculator normalizes the selected scale into a unitless ratio of 1:k. If the scale is 1:48, one inch on the drawing represents 48 inches in the real world.
Drawing to actual
Actual distance = drawing distance × k
At 1/4" = 1'-0", k = 48. A 3.25-inch drawing line represents 156 inches, or 13 feet.
Actual to drawing
Drawing distance = actual distance ÷ k
At 1/8" = 1'-0", k = 96. A 42'-6" real dimension becomes 5 5/16 inches on the drawing.

Terminology can be slippery. In architecture, "quarter-inch scale" usually means 1/4" = 1'-0" (1:48). Do not confuse that with a literal 1:4 ratio. Also, 1" = 1'-0" is 1:12, not full scale; full scale is 1:1.
Why a printed plan can lose its scale
PDF print settings can resize a page. Adobe Acrobat's Fit option reduces or enlarges a page to the printable area, while Actual Size prints without PDF scaling and may crop content that does not fit the selected paper. Custom Scale applies the percentage you specify. Because the exact effect depends on the page and printer setup, there is no trustworthy universal "Fit shrinks plans by X percent" rule.

Print verification check
The print view includes two separate physical reference lines: one intended to be 2.00 inches long and one intended to be 50 mm long. They are deliberately separate because 2.00 inches equals 50.8 mm, not 50 mm. If either printed line measures incorrectly, your browser/printer path changed the output size.

Should I measure a drawing if a written dimension is available?
Use the written dimension. Measuring a scaled drawing is best treated as a convenience or verification method because prints and PDFs can be resized.
What does 1/4" = 1'-0" mean?
One-quarter inch on the drawing represents one real foot. In unitless form, that is a 1:48 scale because one foot contains 12 inches and 12 divided by 0.25 equals 48.
How does the calculator find an unknown drawing scale?
It divides a known real-world distance by the measured drawing distance after converting both to the same base unit. It then shows the exact ratio and the nearest common preset without hiding the percentage difference.
If my print is 90% of the intended size, should I set the printer to 111.1%?
Not automatically. 111.1% is the reciprocal enlargement factor relative to the already-resized output. If the original PDF itself is correct and a Fit/Shrink print setting caused the 90% result, reprint the original at Actual Size / 100% first and verify a known dimension.
