Is an MLT the same as a medical technologist?

Do Medical Laboratory Technicians Need a License?

Not in every state. Certification is issued by a private credentialing organization. Licensure or state certification is government authorization and may be legally required before working.

ASCLS currently identifies 10 states with laboratory-personnel licensure: California, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Montana, Nevada, New York, North Dakota, Tennessee, and West Virginia. Puerto Rico also licenses laboratory personnel.

California

California issues a specific MLT license. Its scope includes waived and moderate-complexity testing and phlebotomy, while excluding high-complexity testing and several specified microscopic and immunohematology procedures. California also requires documented academic coursework and approved clinical training or qualifying experience.

Florida

Florida issues Clinical Laboratory Personnel Technician licenses. Education, training, documentation, specialty, and testing-complexity requirements vary by route. Initial applicants also must meet state application and fingerprinting requirements.

New York

New York uses the term certification for clinical laboratory technicians and licensure for clinical laboratory technologists. Accepted technician pathways include qualifying education and certain current national MLT credentials.
