Is Database Administration Still a Good Career?

According to the latest BLS wage data reported through O*NET, the national median wage for database administrators was $104,620 per year, or $50.30 per hour, in May 2025.
BLS projects DBA employment to decrease about 1 percent from 2024 to 2034, from roughly 78,000 jobs to about 77,500. About 3,800 openings per year are projected over that period, largely because employers will need to replace people who transfer to other occupations or leave the workforce.
Database architects tell a different story. Their national median wage was $139,500 in May 2025, and employment is projected to grow about 9 percent from 2024 to 2034, with approximately 4,000 openings per year.

That does not mean every DBA should immediately bolt for the nearest architecture job. Learning how databases work still matters. Learning only how to perform routine manual administration on one platform is a narrower bet.

Database job titles are messy. O*NET lists Database Engineer among reported job titles for Database Administrators, while Data Engineer appears among reported titles for Database Architects. That alone should kill the idea that every employer uses these labels consistently.

Python appeared in 42 percent, AWS in 29 percent, Azure in 25 percent, followed by technologies including Snowflake, PostgreSQL, Git, Linux, Terraform, shell scripting, PowerShell, MySQL, and MongoDB.
That does not mean every DBA needs all of those tools. It does show how broad the occupation has become.

A bachelor's degree remains the most typical path. BLS says database administrators and architects typically need a bachelor's degree in computer and information technology or a related field.
O*NET provides additional context. When respondents were asked how much education a new hire needs:
- 89 percent said a bachelor's degree for database administrators.
- 4 percent said a post-baccalaureate certificate.
- 3 percent said an associate degree.
For database architects:
- 76 percent said bachelor's degree.
- 14 percent said master's degree.
- 5 percent said a post-secondary certificate.
These O*NET figures describe respondents' views of new-hire education requirements. They do not mean that those percentages of current workers hold each credential.
Common fields of study can include computer science, information technology, information systems, computer engineering, and database or data-management programs.
A degree is not the only thing employers evaluate. Practical database knowledge, platform familiarity, SQL skill, scripting ability, cloud experience, projects, and previous IT experience can all matter. Some people also arrive from adjacent work such as systems administration, development, technical support, analytics, or other infrastructure roles.

Do Database Certifications Matter?
Certifications can be useful, but their value depends on what you are trying to prove.
They tend to make the most sense when:

- A job posting repeatedly asks for a particular credential or technology

Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate
Microsoft's current Azure Database Administrator Associate credential uses exam DP-300 and targets DBAs working with Azure SQL services and SQL Server in cloud, on-premises, and hybrid environments. Microsoft classifies it as intermediate and currently requires renewal every 12 months.
Oracle Database Administration
Oracle currently maintains a learning path for the Oracle Database Administration 2019 Certified Professional credential using exams 1Z0-082 and 1Z0-083. That can make sense for professionals targeting Oracle-heavy enterprise environments.
Google Professional Cloud Database Engineer
Google's Professional Cloud Database Engineer credential targets experienced database professionals working with Google Cloud database solutions. Google lists no formal prerequisite but recommends at least five years of overall database and IT experience, including two years working with Google Cloud database solutions.
What about AWS database certification?
Be careful with old advice. AWS Certified Database - Specialty is retired. AWS stopped offering the exam in April 2024.
AWS currently offers AWS Certified Data Engineer - Associate, but it validates data-engineering skills such as pipelines, data stores, data operations, security, and governance. It is not simply the old DBA certification with a different sticker slapped on it. It may be relevant if you want to move toward data engineering rather than traditional DBA work.
Degree vs. certification vs. experience

There is no universal DBA ladder.

BLS specifically notes that experienced database administrators may advance into database architect positions. But architecture is not merely "DBA Level 2." People can also reach architecture through software engineering, data modeling, cloud infrastructure, enterprise architecture, or other paths.

Will AI and Automation Replace Database Administrators?
Probably not in the simplistic way that question suggests.
Automation has already been replacing parts of database administration for years. Managed cloud platforms can handle many routine maintenance tasks, and database products increasingly provide automated monitoring, scaling, performance recommendations, and other assistance.
That affects labor demand. BLS specifically points to cloud services as one reason organizations may require fewer traditional database administrators. At the same time, BLS expects database architects to benefit from organizations' need for more sophisticated data infrastructure, including infrastructure supporting AI and other advanced uses.

Questions to Ask Before Choosing Database Training
A useful database program should prepare you for more than memorizing commands for one version of one database product.
- Which database platforms will I actually use?
- How much hands-on database work is included?
- Does the program teach SQL deeply enough to troubleshoot and understand database behavior?
- Will I learn database security, permissions, backup, recovery, and performance concepts?
- Does the curriculum include cloud database concepts?
- Will I learn scripting or automation?
- Does the program prepare students for current certifications, and are those certifications relevant to the jobs I want?
- Is the program aimed primarily at database administration, development, architecture, analytics, or data engineering?
- What kinds of entry-level roles have recent graduates pursued?
- Can I build projects or practical experience I can show employers?
That last question matters. Database careers involve systems where small mistakes can have enormous consequences. Employers have a pretty understandable preference for evidence that you can do more than recognize the right answer on a multiple-choice screen.

Database administration is not disappearing, but its center of gravity is moving.
The traditional DBA occupation still offers strong national median pay and thousands of projected openings each year. But federal projections show a slight decline in DBA employment while database architecture is growing considerably faster.
