Figure out the real cost of becoming an aircraft mechanic before a tuition quote and a shiny hangar tour start making decisions for you.

Quick answer: What does A&P school cost?

There is no authoritative national average for A&P school tuition. Current published prices vary dramatically by institution and by what the quote includes.

  • San Diego Miramar College: a 78-unit Airframe & Powerplant certificate at $46 per unit for California residents, or $3,588 in base enrollment tuition before campus fees, tools, testing, and living costs.
  • Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics: $44,250 in tuition for students starting after July 1, 2026, and about $50,700 when its currently listed books/tools, required program fees, and A&P testing bundle are added.
  • Universal Technical Institute, Canton: $52,998.70 in listed direct charges for its 85-week Airframe and Powerplant Technician certificate for enrollments on or after August 1, 2026.

The useful question is not "what does A&P school cost nationally?" It is "what will my path cost after tuition, tools, testing, aid, financing, and lost income?"

A&P School Cost and Break-Even Calculator

Use the numbers from an actual school quote whenever possible. For expected post-training earnings, use a conservative local wage or real employer posting rather than assuming the national median is your first paycheck.

Your expected post-training earnings are equal to or below your current earnings, so a positive short-term payback cannot be calculated from wages alone. That does not make the career change "wrong"; it means the decision depends on longer-term earnings, job fit, benefits, location, or other goals.

Important: This is a planning tool, not financial advice. It does not model taxes, wage growth, overtime, job-search time, benefits, inflation, or future raises. Stress-test more than one scenario.

School or OJT? The Two Main FAA Paths

The FAA recognizes two broad ways to build the training or experience needed for an Airframe and/or Powerplant mechanic certificate.

Comparison of FAA-certificated AMTS training and civilian on-the-job training.
PathTypical timingUpfront tuitionMain trade-off
FAA-certificated Aviation Maintenance Technician School (AMTS)FAA says most take about 18 to 24 monthsCan range from low public-college tuition to $50,000+ at private schoolsStructured, predictable training path but potentially substantial tuition and debt
Civilian on-the-job training (OJT)At least 18 months for one rating or 30 months concurrently for bothUsually little or no school tuitionYou gain experience while working or volunteering, but qualifying opportunities can be harder to find and must be documented carefully

Graduating from an FAA-certificated AMTS does not give you the mechanic certificate by itself. It gives you an approved way to meet the eligibility requirement for testing. You still must pass the applicable FAA knowledge, oral, and practical tests.

How Much Do the A&P Tests Cost?

The certificate itself is not where most of the testing cost comes from. Candidates pay commercial testing providers and designated examiners.

Knowledge tests

Candidates seeking both ratings take three FAA knowledge tests: General, Airframe, and Powerplant. A September 2026 U.S. Government Accountability Office report said stakeholders reported about $175 per knowledge test. Current FAA-approved testing centers commonly list the same price. At $175 each, all three knowledge tests total about $525, before retakes.

Oral and practical testing

The oral and practical exams are administered by FAA Designated Mechanic Examiners (DMEs), and the price is not nationally fixed.

PIA's current fee schedule budgets $400 each for its General, Airframe, and Powerplant oral/practical exam components, or $1,200 total. The September 2026 GAO report found that stakeholders described oral/practical fees of about $500 to more than $1,000 for each of the three tests.

Do this before enrolling: Ask whether the school quote includes all three knowledge tests, DME oral/practical fees, retests, prep courses, and any travel required to reach a DME. Get the answer in writing.

How Long Does A&P School Take?

The FAA says most Part 147 schools take approximately 18 to 24 months, depending on the rating or ratings pursued and the school's schedule.

That is a planning range, not the old federal 1,900-hour rule. The FAA modernized Part 147 in 2022 and removed the prescriptive time-based minimums, giving schools more flexibility to structure curricula aligned with the Aviation Mechanic Airman Certification Standards.

The money issue is bigger than tuition: a longer program may also mean more months of commuting, childcare, reduced working hours, or extra housing. A shorter private program can cost more in tuition but reduce the time before you can pursue certificated mechanic work. That trade-off belongs in the calculation.

Current Aircraft Mechanic Pay and Outlook

Use wage data as a reality check, not a promise.

For Aircraft Mechanics and Service Technicians (SOC 49-3011), May 2025 BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics show:

National May 2025 wage benchmarks for aircraft mechanics and service technicians.
Wage measureNational amount
10th percentile$48,780
Median$79,870
90th percentile$128,890

BLS estimated 138,090 workers in this occupation in May 2025 OEWS data.

BLS Employment Projections use a separate dataset. That program estimates about 140,000 jobs in 2025, rising to 147,600 in 2035: projected growth of 5.4 percent, with about 11,400 openings per year on average over 2025-35.

Industry matters. BLS reports a May 2025 median of $96,170 in air transportation and $72,910 in support activities for air transportation for aircraft mechanics and service technicians. Those are industry medians across workers at many experience levels, not guaranteed new-graduate wages.

Why the calculator does not prefill your salary: The 10th percentile is not "starting pay," the median is not a new-grad promise, and the 90th percentile is not an automatic senior wage. Use a number you can defend locally.

Three Real 2026 Cost Examples

The examples below show why comparing only tuition is useless.

Representative current published aircraft mechanic training costs checked September 17, 2026.
School examplePublished direct costWhat the number means
San Diego Miramar College, CA resident$3,588 base enrollment tuition78-unit A&P certificate at $46 per unit. Campus fees, tools/equipment, testing, and living costs are additional.
Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics, PittsburghAbout $50,700Current 2026-27 tuition plus books/tools/supplies, registration, uniform, technology/materials fees, and its listed $1,725 A&P testing bundle.
Universal Technical Institute, Canton, MI$52,998.70Current direct charges for the 85-week A&P Technician certificate, including listed registration/lab/equipment/books/laptop charges. Exam subsidies may apply under catalog conditions.

Do not use this table to choose a school. Use it to see what a quote can hide. A low tuition figure can expand quickly after tools, exams, campus fees, commuting, and time away from work are added.

Costs People Forget to Ask About

Tools and PPE

Some programs provide or finance a required tool kit. Others expect you to buy your own. Ask for the exact tool list and whether substitutions are allowed before buying anything.

Do not blindly buy a $5,000 rolling shrine to the Snap-on gods before class starts. Your school or employer may provide discounts, specify brands, or supply specialty equipment.

Books and software

FAA handbooks are available digitally, but a school may require paid texts, digital courseware, or a particular device. Treat "books included" and "materials included" as two separate questions.

Testing and retesting

Ask whether tuition includes all three knowledge tests, oral/practical examiner fees, one or more retakes, prep courses, and travel to a DME or test center.

Housing and relocation

Only count extra housing cost caused by school in the calculator. If you already pay $1,600 a month in rent and would keep paying it anyway, that entire rent bill is not an education cost. If relocating adds $700 a month over what you would otherwise spend, use the $700 difference.

Lost income

This is often the largest hidden cost. If you earn $45,000 now, keep only 25 percent of that income during a 20-month full-time program, the simplified foregone-income calculation is $45,000 x (20/12) x 75% = $56,250.

That does not mean school is a bad deal. It means pretending your time is free makes the ROI calculation useless.

Financial Aid Can Change the Math Dramatically

Federal Pell Grant

Federal Student Aid says the maximum Pell Grant for the 2026-27 award year is $7,395. Pell Grants can be used at eligible career and trade schools, but eligibility depends on the student and the institution/program.

FAA Part 147 certification is not the same thing as federal student-aid eligibility. Verify the exact school and program in Federal Student Aid resources and ask the financial aid office which aid applies before counting it in your calculator.

Post-9/11 GI Bill

For August 1, 2026 through July 31, 2027, VA says the full Post-9/11 GI Bill rate can cover:

  • Net tuition and mandatory fees at a public institution of higher learning, subject to the student's eligibility percentage
  • Up to $30,908.34 in net tuition and mandatory fees at a private institution of higher learning or eligible non-college-degree program
  • Up to $1,000 per academic year for books and supplies in qualifying school, apprenticeship, or OJT programs
  • Up to $2,000 for qualifying licensing and certification test fees

VA also provides a step-down housing benefit for approved OJT and apprenticeship programs. Verify the exact school, program, test, or apprenticeship in VA systems before treating any benefit as guaranteed.

Scholarships and workforce funding

Aviation organizations, schools, and local workforce boards periodically offer scholarships or training support. Deadlines and eligibility move too often to bake one stale list into a calculator. Search current opportunities and subtract only confirmed aid.

When A&P School Is More Likely to Make Financial Sense

  • You can use a public or lower-cost AMTS without relocating.
  • Grants, veterans benefits, scholarships, or employer aid materially reduce your out-of-pocket cost.
  • You currently earn materially less than a realistic aircraft-maintenance wage in your target market.
  • You value a structured training schedule and predictable path to FAA test eligibility.
  • You can keep some income while training.
  • The school gives you a complete written cost sheet instead of a suspiciously sexy tuition-only number.

When to think twice before borrowing heavily

  • You would need large private loans at high interest rates.
  • Relocation adds substantial housing and travel costs.
  • Your current income is already close to or above realistic first-year aircraft-maintenance pay.
  • You have access to a legitimate paid OJT route that can satisfy FAA experience requirements.
  • The school's quote excludes tools, DME fees, test retakes, or major mandatory fees.
  • You are using the national median as though it were a guaranteed starting salary.
  • You have not verified the exact campus and program are FAA-certificated and eligible for any aid you plan to use.

School Comparison Worksheet: What to Ask Before You Enroll

Run the calculator once for each school you are seriously considering, then compare these items side by side. The table is printable.

Question
Total tuition for full A&P pathway
Mandatory program/campus fees
Books and digital materials included?
Required tool kit included?
All 3 knowledge tests included?
DME oral/practical fees included?
Retests included?
Program duration / weekly schedule
Can you realistically work while enrolled?
FAA-certificated AMTS at this campus?

Net cost after confirmed aid

The school with the lowest tuition is not always the cheapest path. The fastest schedule is not automatically the best ROI either. You need the full cost, time cost, and financing cost on the same page.

A&P School vs. Paid OJT: A Financial Reality Check

The OJT route deserves more attention because the FAA explicitly recognizes it and describes it as usually the least expensive way to gain the required experience.

But "cheap" does not mean "easy." The FAA says civilian applicants need qualifying hands-on maintenance experience under appropriate supervision and documentary evidence acceptable to the agency. Time spent merely training does not automatically count, and the experience must cover work appropriate to the rating sought.

For someone who can land a qualifying paid maintenance role near home, OJT can be financially powerful: little or no tuition, ongoing earnings, and direct experience. For someone who cannot find a qualifying opportunity or wants a more structured route, an AMTS may be the more practical choice even if its sticker price is higher.

How to Use the Calculator Without Lying to Yourself

Use your school's actual quote

Do not type "$20,000 because Google said A&P school is about $20k." Use the actual full-program tuition and required fees from the campus you are considering.

Use conservative post-training earnings

BLS medians describe the occupation, not your first paycheck. Search current local job postings and ask employers what they pay newly certificated mechanics.

Count only incremental living costs

Housing you would pay anyway is not created by school. Added rent, relocation, commuting, or childcare can be.

Stress-test the ugly scenario

Run the calculator again with less aid, a higher APR, six extra months of training, a lower first-year wage, and more lost income. If the economics only work when every assumption is perfect, that is useful information before you sign a financing agreement.

What This Calculator Cannot Tell You

No calculator can tell you whether you will enjoy working nights in a hangar, whether a local airline will hire you in 18 months, whether you will relocate for better pay, or whether you will eventually move into inspection, lead, supervisory, or specialized maintenance roles.

It can tell you something simpler and still valuable: how much financial risk you are taking to get your shot.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does aircraft mechanic school cost?

There is no authoritative national average. Current published examples range from a few thousand dollars in base resident tuition at subsidized public colleges to more than $50,000 in direct charges at private career schools. Compare total program cost, not just tuition.

How much does an A&P license cost?

The FAA calls it a mechanic certificate with Airframe and/or Powerplant ratings. For both ratings, candidates take General, Airframe, and Powerplant knowledge tests plus oral/practical testing. Current knowledge tests are commonly about $175 each, while DME oral/practical fees vary by examiner and location. School-based testing bundles can exceed $1,700, and market quotes can be higher.

How long is A&P school?

The FAA says most FAA-certificated Aviation Maintenance Technician Schools take about 18 to 24 months, depending on the rating and program structure.

Can I become an A&P mechanic without going to school?

Yes. The FAA allows applicants to qualify through documented practical experience. The minimum is 18 months for one rating or 30 months concurrently for both Airframe and Powerplant ratings. The experience must be acceptable to the FAA and cover work appropriate to the rating sought.

Can financial aid pay for aircraft mechanic school?

Potentially. Eligible students at eligible schools or programs may qualify for federal aid. The 2026-27 maximum Pell Grant is $7,395. FAA certification of a school does not by itself guarantee Title IV federal aid eligibility.

Is A&P school worth it?

It can be, especially when aid or low public tuition keeps debt small and the training opens a meaningful earnings increase. It can be a much riskier bet when private borrowing is high, relocation is expensive, or your current earnings already match realistic aircraft-mechanic pay. Compare school with the FAA-recognized OJT route before borrowing heavily.

Sources and Methodology

Facts and cost examples were checked September 17, 2026.

Data note: Wage and employment figures use May 2025 BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics for SOC 49-3011. Outlook and annual openings use the separate BLS Employment Projections 2025-35 dataset. Those programs use different methods and can report slightly different employment totals; they are intentionally labeled separately rather than mashed into one fake "official" number.
