Before products or equipment are built, they are usually first developed virtually through the use of Computer-Aided Design (CAD).  Professionals in product design, manufacturing, industial design, and engineering utilize CAD tools to create the detailed designs needed to produce products as diverse as consumer appliances and custom manufacturing tools.  Students who would like to combine their interests in industrial design, engineering, or drafting with a rewarding high-tech career should explore options in Computer-Aided Design.   Request More Information

Program Description
The Computer-Aided Design-Mechanical Drafting is an exciting, rewarding and promising career choice. Westwood’s CAD program equips students with the skills necessary to become a highly desirable candidate for many careers available to the skilled CAD operator. Mechanical Drafting students receive training on recent releases of AutoCAD, a popular CAD application that provides experience in developing technical drawings related to the field. Students learn to use CAD combined with theory and lab environment, where they are exposed to the ideas and principles in a lecture setting and then immediately put that instruction to use in practical lab projects. This hands-on learning environment, coupled with outstanding industry-experienced faculty, ensures that graduates are well prepared for the work force.

Program Objectives
The Associate Degree program provides the student with the entry-level skills necessary to enter the mechanical drafting field. The majority of student time will be spent actually doing the design and computerized drafting required in the working world. The student receives a theoretical background, including applied mathematics, communication skills, and job search techniques.

Laboratories and Equipment
The CAD Department has lecture classrooms, a large drafting laboratory with individual student work areas, and a CAD lab. Each individual drafting work station consists of a drafting table, stool, and a parallel bar. Each CAD lab station is equipped with a monitor, mouse, and a keyboard, interfaced with a PC, using industry-standard AutoCAD software. This equipment provides students with training on one of the industry’s most popular PC based Computer-Aided Drafting Systems.
