The Westwood College HVAC/R associate degree and diploma programs teach you the details of installation and maintenance of the equipment used in heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC-R) systems. As these systems become more complex, more specialized skills are needed for conforming to local codes and local and federal regulations. Candidates who are self-starting problem solvers and enjoy working outside are ideal for the HVAC-R Program.
The Westwood HVAC-R program offers students hands-on involvement with small, medium and large scale heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. Students experience first-hand how sophisticated the technology is in HVAC/R. Students work with electronic and pneumatic systems that are all controlled by computers.
The HVAC-R program builds on the strong residential foundation of the diploma program and emphasizes commercial applications as well as detailed diagnostic skills and electrical /mechanical controls. It also introduces entry-level skills needed to work with HVAC-R software. At the end of the program the student will take the ARI/GAMA Student Competency examinations. These skills will provide AOS graduates with opportunities to maintain and develop more advanced HVAC/R systems in residential and commercial structures.
The HVAC-R Department has one classroom, four laboratories/shops and an operations room. Classrooms are equipped with audio-visual aids and demonstration units to support various lectures. Students are supplied with the necessary equipment and/or trainers for use in shop projects. The department supports a specialized trainer which stimulates control systems, an energy management program and SimuTech computer programs used for troubleshooting. Students also have access to reference materials in the library as well as access to the Internet.
