Train to be an Occupational Therapy Assistant. With your Associate of Science degree in Occupational Therapy Assistance, you will work under the supervision of a Registered Occupational Therapist. You will learn the therapeutic use of self-care, work, and play activities to increase independent function and performance of patients. You will also learn to enhance development, diminish or remediate pathology, diminish or prevent disability, achieve and maintain a maximal state of health and wellness.
You will gain knowledge on how to facilitate learning of new skills to restore, reinforce and enhance performance and quality of life of a patient who may have physical, psychosocial or cognitive impairments. Such impairments may result from developmental deficits, the aging process, physical injury, illness, or psychological and social disabilities.
Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants work in acute care and psychiatric hospitals, rehabilitation centers, skilled nursing facilities, neonatology units, preschool, elementary and high schools, prison systems, social service agencies and wellness centers. Additionally, Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants may practice in industrial injury clinics, sheltered workshops, home-health programs, hand clinics, and geriatric day care centers.
