Interdisciplinary Studies
The Interdisciplinary Studies program differs from Grantham's General Studies program in that the core topics are delved into more deeply but the intent remains the same - namely, allowing the student to be a generalist as opposed to a program specialist.
The Grantham Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS) program requires 125 credit hours, and many of these are electives or general education electives allowing the student to explore various disciplines. Developing writing skills is a major component of the IDS program as over 50% of the required courses involve writing for content and persuasion.
The Interdisciplinary Studies program is suitable for the generalist who desires a broad knowledge base of such areas as: (1) analytics (e.g. math, computer science, computer information systems, and software applications); (2) English literature, composition, and technical writing; (3) basic life and physical sciences; (4) the humanities; (5) social and behavioral sciences; (6) electronics engineering technology; and (7) business and management.
In this program, such topics as college algebra, computer essentials, computer applications, the basics of electronics engineering technology, physical and life sciences, psychology, philosophy, sociology, world history, business administration, and criminal justice are covered. Writing is emphasized in most of these areas. Writing assignments typically involve essays, reports, critiques, letters, business correspondence, and projects.
