CDI College has produced a video that creatively shows the journey students take from their first day of classes to the day they step out into their chosen careers. High School Program Fights Childhood Obesity and Poor Nutrition

by Ashley Gaglardi Friday, October 28, 2011 12:39:00 PM

Nutrition Program in High Schools Fights Childhood Obesity and Poor NutritionChildhood obesity and poor nutrition have become epidemics in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one third of American adults are obese. What is truly staggering, however, is that 17% of children in the U.S. are obese. In fact, since 1980, obesity rates for kids have tripled. If these numbers don’t take your breath away, take a step back and really think about it. Our experiences in childhood—physical, mental, and emotional—are the blueprints for the rest of our lives. Childhood obesity can be a typhoon of destruction affecting every aspect of normal development. If we wouldn’t be comfortable with 17% of kids chain-smoking on their recess breaks, then why are we so complacent about obesity?

Students Show Solidarity for Occupy Wall Street by Walking Out

by Ashley Gaglardi Thursday, October 06, 2011 2:45:00 PM

Students Show Solidarity for Occupy Wall Street by Walking OutIf I were a student in New York yesterday, I might have been ditching class in the name of anti-capitalist rebellion. What can I say? The rivers of subversion run through my veins. So what exactly would be worth walking out of a class you’ve paid good money for? Joining the ranks of a wide demographic of people gathered to protest the socioeconomic inequality and injustice that is currently rampant in the United States. Though, you may have heard this phenomenon described a bit more objectively in the news as “Occupy Wall Street.”

The Occupy Wall Street demonstrations started on September 17 and have been ongoing since. The impetus for the protests started with Canadian anti-consumerism publication Adbusters, which suggested a peaceful occupation of Wall Street to protest financial corruption within the US government. Their website states:

#OCCUPYWALLSTREET is a people powered movement for democracy that began in America on September 17 with an encampment in the financial district of New York City. Inspired by the Egyptian Tahrir Square uprising and the Spanish acampadas, we vow to end the monied corruption of our democracy … join us! We're now in DAY 20.

While the Adbusters agenda focuses on the broad, governmental corruption aspect of the US financial situation, attendees of Occupy Wall Street have been protesting an ever-widening array of issues. People have come to protest the unfair influence of money on politicians’ agendas, unfair tax distribution, corporate welfare policies, and general economic and social inequality. The list goes on and on. It goes on so long, in fact, that protestors convened on the 13th day in an attempt to come up with a more cohesive platform, fearing that their efforts were being lost in a sea of idealistic, radical, scattered viewpoints.

Canadian University Fair Offers Opportunity to Study and Go Abroad!

by Ashley Gaglardi Monday, September 26, 2011 9:37:00 AM

Canadian University Fair Offers Opportunity to Study and Go Abroad! The Study and Go Abroad education fairs are kicking off in Canada again this year, showcasing top universities from around the world. If you’re interested in checking out a university fair that can show you what your options are for studying abroad, this gigantic international education expo looks like it could be an awesome starting point.

The list of attending exhibitors is impressive, with major representation from the United States, Canada, England, and Australia, as well as a wide variety of schools from several other countries. Potential students can chat with representatives from over 130 schools offering undergraduate, post-grad, and vocational programs. Additionally, the Study and Go Abroad website provides a generous list of schools with scholarships available to qualifying students!

Students also don't need to be solely interested in attending school overseas in order to find helpful information at the Study and Go Abroad fairs. There is an awesome representation of schools right in Canada to choose from, such as The Art Institute of Vancouver, located in beautiful British Columbia!

Recruit in Canada has been organizing the Study and Go Abroad education fairs since 1993, and they have proven successful enough to have expanded across the country, now including five major Canadian cities. The international education expos take place twice a year, and this fall’s line-up will be starting in just a few days. If you’re near any of the following locations, I would definitely recommend stopping by and checking out everything the fairs have to offer!

- Ottawa: September 29 - Ottawa Convention Centre

- Toronto: October 1-2 - Metro Toronto Convention Centre

- Vancouver: October 4 - Vancouver Convention Centre

- Calgary: October 5 - Calgary Telus Convention Centre

Paris University Illustrates the Pros of Affirmative Action

by Ashley Gaglardi Friday, September 16, 2011 8:37:00 AM

Paris University Illustrates the Pros of Affirmative ActionAffirmative action: these two simple words seem to reliably ignite debate. It seems to be one of those topics that can cause even the most civilized people to tear into each other like rabid dogs. Affirmative action policies are intended to promote equality in society by giving extra opportunities to those who are at a perceived disadvantage, whether due to race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or national origin. However, opponents do not see the pros of affirmative action, and often refer to it as “reverse discrimination,” claiming it does more harm than good by causing an entirely different breed of segregation.

Ten years ago, a university in France decided to pioneer a new brand of affirmative action. Since then, they have proven that when done right, affirmative action policies can be highly effective in promoting social equity.

Coupons for College – University offers Groupon for Deal on Tuition

by Ashley Gaglardi Wednesday, September 07, 2011 8:26:00 AM

Coupons for CollegePeople who have watched Extreme Couponing on TLC probably fall into two categories: those who think that living by couponing is a manifestation of obsessive-compulsive disorder, and those who think that coupons are part of the hierarchy of human needs. There may be a middle ground, however—particularly when coupons can help you get a great deal on your post-secondary education.

If you haven’t heard about Groupon yet, please, take a minute to Google it. It can turn even the strictest coupon skeptic into an all-out aficionado. Groupon is a website business that offers “deal-of-the-day” gift certificates at discount prices. Participating companies can include local businesses, huge corporations, and anything in between. The variation is awesome! While I’ve seen Groupon discounts for everything from laser hair removal to golfing packages, I had yet to ever come across a coupon for education. Thankfully for savvy, money-saving students everywhere, couponing may be bridging the gap into the education sector.
