Spa Aromatherapy Education:
5 Tips for Choosing the Right School

Spa and aromatherapy education can be a fulfilling choice for those interested in cosmetology or the rapidly growing natural health industry. If you are considering an aromatherapy school for your post-secondary education, here are five tips to help ensure you choose the one that best fits your learning style and career goals.

1. Begin with the Basics

If you are someone that has always been interested in alternative techniques and therapies like aromatherapy, but don't have a solid knowledge of what it is or how it works, then it's important to choose a program that starts off by providing a solid foundational knowledge. To give a very basic definition, aromatherapy is the study of plant oils and their clinical, therapeutic, and esthetic applications. An education, however, should provide you with more expansive knowledge, including:

  • Aromatherapy history
  • In-depth training about essential oils
  • An overview of the olfactory system and the effects of aromatherapy
  • Chemistry and how it relates to aromatherapy

2. Get on the Safe Side

At first glance, aromatherapy may not seem like a field that entails many health risks. There tends to be a common belief that if something is natural, it cannot be harmful—but this isn't the case. Certain essential oils will have cross reactions if mixed, and can even become toxic. Others are known as common allergens and should be avoided. Some essential oils have been known to cause photosensitivity and should not be used prior to spending time in the sun. These are just a few examples of necessary precautions. Therefore, a quality program should include comprehensive safety training.

3. Match Curriculum and Career Goals

Your education should be a good match for your career goals. For example, if you intend to concentrate more on the health side of the field, rather than cosmetology, you will want to ensure the program you choose has a solid focus on healthcare techniques, including how the use of essential oils can have a positive effect on pathologies of different systems, such as muscular, vascular, neurological, respiratory, and digestive.

However, if you are more interested in cosmetic applications, you will want to look for a program that concentrates on teaching you how to use essential oils for skin, body, and hair care. In this case, your program should teach you how to create the right mix of essential oils for purposes like toning, cleansing, drying, or moisturizing skin and hair.

Other possible areas of concentration include massage aromatherapy and olfactory aromatherapy.

4. Gain Business Basics

Business skills can be another important aspect of your training—especially if you intend to work in retail or start your own business. Therefore, your training should include at least a basic overview of business skills and knowledge, involving:

  • Entrepreneurial basics
  • Marketing
  • Insurance
  • Networking

5. Get Real

When it comes to education, one of the most valuable kinds of training you can receive is real-life experience. For this reason, many programs offer an internship as part of the curriculum. This can allow you to work within an industry setting under the supervision of a professional aromatherapist. Your internship experience will not only give you a realistic idea of a career in the field, it can also provide you with the chance to network and make industry contacts who could prove to be a great help when it comes to securing a job after graduation.

Getting Started

Now that you have a clear idea of the aspects to consider when it comes to pursuing training, your next step is to research individual schools and programs and find the best fit for your career goals. This online guide to aromatherapy education is a great place to get started.
