Examining the Different Designations

When it comes to interior design schools, there are a variety of education levels available, so a great first step is to find out about the different program options, and decide which one is the right choice for you. Here are some of the most common program options found at an interior design school:
Certificate
An interior design certificate program can generally be completed in a year or less, and tends to be career-focused, with the goal of preparing you to pursue entry-level positions upon graduation. Generally offered by vocational schools, certificate programs can cover hands-on skills related to materials, textiles, lighting, and much more. As a graduate, you can be prepared to pursue entry-level positions, such as junior designer or decorative product specialist.
Diploma
Diploma programs from interior design colleges or vocational schools are similar to certificate programs, as they are also career-oriented and focus on building hands-on skills. However, they tend to be slightly longer, averaging around one to two years. In addition to hands-on training, an interior design diploma program may also include some theoretical background courses, such as the fundamentals of residential and commercial design, or the history of furniture and interiors. Upon graduating, you can be prepared to pursue such entry-level positions as junior designer and interior designer.
Degree
When it comes to interior design degrees, there are a few different options available. Here are some of the most common interior design degree programs offered by colleges and universities:
- Associate's Degree: Usually two to three years in length. Often includes hands-on interior design training and a strong theoretical background, as well as business and/or general education courses. Prepares graduates for positions such as interior designer, residential designer, commercial designer, or CADD designer.
- Bachelor's Degree: A more in-depth degree program, which typically takes four years to complete. Usually includes hands-on and theoretical training, as well as more advanced business and general education courses. Graduates are usually qualified for higher-level positions, such as senior designer and space planning director.
- Master's Degree: The highest level of interior design training available, a master's degree can take up to four years to complete, following the completion of a bachelor's degree. It includes advanced-level training that prepares graduates for management, leadership, or educational-related positions.
With all interior design schools and program options, it is important to find out what the prerequisites are. Some programs may not have any prerequisites, while others may require a high school diploma, or a specific number of college credits.
Additional Program Options
Aside from the standard interior design programs, some interior design schools may offer other courses related to the field. Here are some of the additional program options that may be of interest:
- Sustainable Interior Design: focuses on teaching you to use eco-friendly materials and practices in the interior design field.
- Home Furnishings Merchandising: allows you to specialize in the sales and merchandising of interior design products and supplies.
- Kitchen & Bath Design: gives you the opportunity to specialize in the design of two of the most heavily-used areas of residential dwellings.
