Cosmetology: Careers in the Beauty Industry

Cosmetologist
Cosmetologists, also called estheticians, are basically the "general practitioners" of the cosmetology world. Cosmetologists can also be responsible for taking on administrative tasks, such as customer service, product retailing, and salon management.

Nail Technician
Nail technicians are trained professionals who specialize in performing manicures and pedicures. This cosmetology career can be a truly creative field, as it involves creating beautiful works of art that help others achieve a polished look.
Other tasks performed by a nail technician can include applying artificial nails and acrylic fills. Many people in this cosmetology field also perform health-related services, such as hand, arm, and foot massage, nail wraps, and mending.
Makeup Artist
Makeup artists work with cosmetics to help people look and feel their best by enhancing their natural beauty. By working in this area of the cosmetology industry, they can have the honor of making a bride feel stunning on her wedding day, or helping a teenager feel picture-perfect on prom night.
Outside of traditional makeup application, makeup artists can also choose to specialize in makeup for film, television, or theater. For example, they can be responsible for creating prosthetics, performing airbrushing, and working on props and animatronics used in special effects for life-like monsters or quirky characters. Makeup is also a huge part of photography and high fashion, with makeup artists working on models, applying the finishing touches that bring a fashion designer's vision to life.
