Career Trends

Whether you are looking into changing your current career or just starting out in the workforce, keeping an eye on career trends can help you get the necessary training for a job that is currently in demand and has the staying power to take you from entry-level to retirement.

The key to tracking career trends is to take a close look at what is driving them. Trends in the workforce are created due to needs. Today's society is constantly looking to save time, reduce cost, increase safety, and take less of a toll on the environment. This creates a response in today's industries to take action in order to meet these needs, which in turn brings them to search for employers with the required skills and knowledge to step up to the plate.

In order to gain the abilities today's employers are seeking, training in a specialization can be incredibly valuable. Because of the desire to 'keep up with the times' and create continual forward progress, businesses often take one job that previously covered a broad range of duties, and branch it out into numerous specialized positions.

One example is human resources manager. Previously, one person would often take on the many tasks that are associated with the management and organization of staff, but in today's businesses, many times there can be an actual human resources department, which can consist of a variety of positions, such as benefits manager, payroll manager, retirement planning manager, health, safety, and wellness programs manager, and medical services administration manager.

Another aspect of career trends to consider is the fact that there are career avenues that could always be classified as a long-term trend; or to think of it another way, aren't a trend at all, because they are a necessity. When deciding your future career path, include taking a realistic look at businesses or services which will likely always be necessary. If you think about it, people will always require things like food, homes, transportation, and healthcare. Therefore, service-based jobs, including auto repair, catering, medical assisting, and construction will likely always stay in demand.

Based on these factors, there are a number of career fields that can provide a successful career future. Here are some of the most promising industries and positions to consider, and why:

Business

  • As more and more businesses start up, there is a need created for promotion, marketing, and advertising in order to highlight a specific company's products or services and set them apart from the crowd.

Education

  • The high number of people who go on to pursue post-secondary education, or return to school as an adult to prepare for a second career make the teaching field a great choice.

Healthcare

  • The highly publicized shortage of healthcare professionals is projected to only increase in the coming years, due to the huge population of aging 'baby boomers', making this career field an ideal choice for stable employment.

Information Technology

  • Computers play a huge role in virtually every industry, creating a need for IT professionals.

Legal/Criminal Justice

  • With 9/11 and other terrorist threats fresh in the mind of today's society, and security being tightened in a variety of environments, people are becoming more and more safety-conscience, making the legal and criminal justice career field a fulfilling choice.

Skilled Trades & Services

  • The skilled trades and services industry is one of the best choices for stable employment, and holds a variety of opportunities for those who enjoy working with their hands and getting away from the '9 to 5'.

Technology

  • Technological advances continue to move forward, making the technology industry a fast-paced and exciting choice for employment.

Hospitality & Travel

  • Although today's society has been found to spend more time working, and less leisure time than previous generations, statistics show that they tend to take full advantage of the downtime they do have, which many enjoy spending on vacation, traveling, and dining out.
